Penn Assembly of International Students taking quesitons

Hi everyone. This is Penn's Assembly of International Student. We are the only organization that advocates for the undergraduate international community at Penn.

If you have any questions specifically pertaining to international student life at Penn, please feel free to ask here. This account is accessed by 16 Penn upperclassmen from all over the world that would be extremely happy to answer your questions.

great! there’s also Online Chat Program this week for internationals.

Hi :D

I am a high school senior studying in a junior college in Singapore. Firstly, thank you for taking time off your busy schedule for sharing your experiences with your juniors and UPenn-hopeful.

I’ve been doing my research on UPenn; however I would like to ask some questions.

It is published on Penn’s website that the acceptance rate for the Class 2012 was 16.95%. However, I believe that the rate would vary among courses/departments. I would like to ask if you know the acceptance rates for the Wharton School and the SEAS (better if you know the acceptance rates for international students, asking for a huge sum of fin aid)

What are the admission officers looking for when they evaluate a student who apply for the Jerome Fisher programme? Both engineering/sciences caliber as well foundations in economics? I am pretty clueless about how they judge if a student is suitable for the business school.

I am a research student at high school, and hence research activities in UPenn would interest me a lot if I ever got admitted. For the past year, I was looking into the area of production of hydrogen that can be used in fuel cell. I would like to ask about the research activities in UPenn (if you know). It is said on the website that more than $700m are spent on R&D annually. But does this figure reflect the research activity at undergraduate level? Would students at undergraduate level be provided opportunities to conduct research.

I am concerned about the level of work in UPenn. Is it very stressful in UPenn relative to other colleges? Would you please share your social life besides school, especially from an international student’s perspective?

How safe is Philadelphia? I heard that it is a very beautiful city though :D

Thank you!

I don’t think economics or business experience are at all prerequisites for Wharton. I’m sure they like to see leadership and initiative, but not necessarily in business (at this point in our lives at least). The acceptance rate overall was about 10% I think, and while I can’t say anything about internationals needing aid, I can guarantee that it was much, much lower. Maybe 3%-5%? M&T even less.

Is anyone going to Penn from Spain because that would be SWEEEEEEET

Is anyone from a Spanish speaking country because I’m fluent in Spanish and we can talk because, if you’re out there, I love your language. I can do Italian as well.

im from spain =)
was mostly raised in America though

Oh my god!!! Which part of Spain are you from??? Did you apply to the International Program??? Are you CAS? You have to give me your email. I love Spain!!!

haha no i didn’t apply to the international program. I’m from Murcia, in the southeast. It’s really beautiful, but all of spain is so…lol I’m going to wharton.

Penn has a program in Alicante! So close to Murcia… Are you going to be taking Spanish at Penn? When did you move to the U.S.?

I like Spanish too!
Anyway my question is…

Is the International Student Orientation crucial? Because that starts on Aug 30 I heard and I’m arriving at Penn on Sept 1. I can’t change my flight
I heard the int’l orientation was just for completing forms and… like… educating int’l students about the life in the U.S.? :S I’m from Canada so the latter wouldn’t be too important for me lol

Yup, I’m definitely taking spanish at Penn and I was looking into the program in Alicante too. It’s actually only 15 minutes from where my family lives. I moved here when I was 5 but I go back and forth almost every spring break and summer.

You’re sooooo lucky. Since you’re native, what course would you be taking in the fall? 219?

I can’t believe you’re from Spain!!!

Haha I don’t know yet. Where are you from? Have you ever been to spain?

Well no, but I’ve seen pictures, movies everything that has had to so with Spain. Next summer, I know that I’ll be in Spain one way or another. Which college house are you hoping to live in?

I applied to living cultures in riepe. Hopefully I’ll get in cause I really want to live in the quad. How about you?

I applied to the international program. Hopefully I’ll get in and meet other Spaniards, if they exist. But you should think of taking Spa219 in the fall, I definitely will. It would be really nice to finally get to meet a Spaniard who isn’t my teacher.

haha I don’t think they exist.

lol I know but I still have hope. But because I think you’re right, you have to take Spanish so that I can meet the only freshman Spaniard! Which state do you live in?

New Jersey. you?
