PENN CAS recruiting/MBA

Hey Everyone,

Do PENN's CAS econ majors still land good banking/consulting internships? How would CAS look to prestigious business schools like Harvard and Wharton for an MBA?

CAS econ majors are in a good position, but to qualify for the top MBA programs, you will have to get your BA in econ and then do a few years at a private firm before you apply. MBA schools look for great undergraduate grades and real world experience.

In terms of internships, it is definitely harder for CAS econ majors to land internships in OCR (On Campus Recruiting) as all the firms who travel come looking for Wharton students. Many internships out there can be geared towards theoretical econ majors, but the ones who travel to campus favor the business school students.

Punkisimo, I was looking for you to send me a message. I thought you would be applying to the business school as it seemed a better fit for you. Wharton is a well rounded education. It is not simply a trade school.

The College’s econ program is very competitive and has a fantastic reputation. However, it really isn’t geared towards banking jobs. Consulting is a very popular destination for our Econ majors as they have a very in depth understanding of economic forecasting. You should have an easy time landing consulting internships.

Hey,

Thanks for your help, as I am strongly leaning towards CAS. I know you recommend Wharton but my Dad said he would hire me no matter what for internships, CAS or Wharton. I really love, PENN and would not want to put my life on the line and risking a rejection or deferral. As we discussed in previous posts, my dad recommended CAS not only for the higher acceptance rate but so I can possibly minor in music, which is my true passion. No matter what, after graduate school my dad is going to help me build a successful company like he did after he graduated stern. As my dad built one of the biggest record companies known today, I feel like I am going to have a great and lucrative career if things turn out as planned. My main concern is the education I am going to receive at either school. With my main target being the music industry, I feel like CAS would be my best fit. If I were to Major in Econ. and take Wharton classes such as finance, accounting, etc, would I receive a solid business education that would benefit me in grad schools such as Harvard, Wharton or Stern? I also wanted to add that the Wharton prestige os not factoring into my decision at all, as Penn as a whole is clearly one of the best and prestigious schools being ranked at #8. I personally think that it deserves to be around 4-6. Hopefully it will in years to come.

How do the Wharton kids view the college econ. kids? How do kids get along at penn?

I am in Wharton, and like I keep saying, the difference between the schools is mutual and respected. For me, I assume College Econ students prefer theoretical Econ against the hands on business school study. I don’t predict they all want to switch over. The problem is that some kids do apply to CAS and wish to switch over later, and so it is a problem of integrity and not about mutual respect.

I have many friends who are Econ majors in the College and love what they study. I personally don’t have a preference for the theoretical economics, but I definitely see the value. The Econ department rigorously prepares students for economic forecasting as well as analyzing the economic development of foreign countries and globalization.

If you are reading this post and trying to decide whether you want to apply to CAS or Wharton - The College teaches economic theory, and the business school teaches business economics skills. They are different, despite the fact that they share the ‘economics’ moniker.

If you were unfortunately considering applying to CAS and later transferring, trying to be sneaky, read my earlier post. In addition to not being a noble choice, that’s not a good strategy for future business purposes.

Again in summary, I have utmost respect for all Penn students as everyone on campus is absurdly smart and hard working - that’s how they got here. Diversity of intellectual passions and scholarly pursuits is what makes the world go round… not money.

Wharton and College kids get along just fine. It really doesn’t matter how Wharton kids view Penn kids, just don’t hang out with any jerks who look down on you for your school/major.

Awesome AJ,

I thoroughly read through your post and am almost certain that I want CAS from a personal standpoint. Hopefully the college ranks up there with Stanford and Princeton in years to come. I’m sure it will
