Tomorrow is the last day to submit supplementary portfolios, so I imagine they will start ramping-up after that. It must be stressful considering that they have a little over a month to make the decisions.
@toffys That is false. I don’t know who told you that, but whoever said that is incorrect. That is only true in extremely rare cases, and most of the time it would be for RD applicants. @desie1 is correct. People are accepted with and without interviews. It just happens to be based on where you live. Perhaps an interview may be more important for a certain school and probably more likely for dual-degree programs, but in all honesty, they don’t really play much of a difference. The equivalent of what you are suggesting would be a likely letter, which, at least during the ED selection round, goes to recruited athletes.
Is today the last day to submit supplementary materials?? Or tomorrow? It says the deadline is 10 days after admission deadlines…
Tomorrow
I wouldn’t worry. I’m still waiting to hear from an alumni too.
@OCgirl12 thank you!!
No one from my school is applying and its an international school without gpa or rank, im a u.s citizen. What would PEnn do?
Yeah don’t worry if you haven’t been contacted yet
I had my interview a few hours ago with an M&T Alumni! Went great!
@Najubhai Haha actually yes. I was coming from my school’s powderpuff game so I quickly put on a dressy blouse on the top and sweats on the bottom.
If you look through the Class of 2019 ED Decisions Thread you’ll realise how insignificant your application is in the larger scheme of things. Even 2400, 4.0s get rejected.
But if I see a reject on 15th of December I swear I’ll stab myself.
As I understand, in the “holistic” view of things, scores mean only “so-much”. As long as they meet the benchmark, 2390 vs. 2400 doesn’t make a huge difference. Similarly 3.9 vs 4.0 doesn’t signify much.
They key differentiation comes from the essays, recommendations and ECs. Essays show how someone can actually think out-of-the-box or be creative. Many can get 2400 and 4.0 but creativity is something different.
I truly hope and believe uPenn values this. The recommendations and ECs should support the essay.
@shivaya not just a 2390 vs 2400! People say anything 2300+ is valued the same!
@richardshaw December 11, not 15
@ShaunakK98 - Thanks for the comment. The point there is that the # is immaterial as long as you meet the minimum benchmarks:-). I come from the ACT world and 34-36 are all 99% - so, it doesn’t make a huge difference between a 34 and 35 or 36.
And… if you are in India, hope you are not losing your sleep over this:-) Good luck!
@shivaya is correct, but I believe the benchmarks are actually even lower than the top 1%. I think that a 2200+ on the SAT or a 33+ on the ACT is good enough to keep you in the running with anyone. I think it’s just used as a baseline to see if you will be able to handle the workload, and I don’t think they necessarily believe that someone with a 2300 will be better equipped to handle it than someone with a 2200. I really don’t think tiers are used necessarily, and if they are, it ought to be minimal. No one should be judged by one test.
@shivaya Sleepless nights do happen How I wish they could declare our decisions faster!
Here is an interesting article along those lines from 2013 where admissions says only 1 in 7 essays are … http://www.phillymag.com/news/2013/02/07/penn-admissions-applicant-essays-dont-matter/
That article has me a bit confused. Are they referring to the fact that they only read one in seven essays written by kids with sub par scores, or one in seven essays for the kids that make the initial cut and they choose those randomly?
