Penn Professor to study with essay question: must be related to your major?

Hey all,
one of the Penn essay questions asks you what professor you would like to study with and why. I am particularly enamored with a certain sociology/law professor at penn, but am applying to wharton.
Does this matter significantly? For example, would it be better to talk about someone who teaches at wharton, or an economics professorR?
Thanks.

I second that question. I was under the impression that it doesn't necessarily have to be in your intended major...

if you're applying to wharton, a wharton professor would probably be the best idea; though really it comes down to the quality of what you write. Genuine interest in a professor in a different department is probably better than generic bs for someone in wharton.

p.s. am i the only one who found the description of th OP's interest in a professor kind of creepy? :-P

you have 300 characters. thats like 3 well formed sentences.

i dont really know anything about any of the professors and am not really set on a major so could i just be like i dont know any professors but i am excited to work with all teachers of penn's distinguished faculty

no, i wouldn't do that at all. it makes it look like you you're:

a) just mindlessly sucking up to the school

b) just applying for the hell of it and haven't done any research into the school's faculty

10 minutes on a department website will get you any information you need

Haha, no it's just who I had for my law & society class this summer. It isn't anything big, just thought that he would be the easiest to write about.
I think I'll go with researching wharton profs.. I don't feel like writing about the prof I actually talked to would really help..
