***PENN REGULAR DECISION DISCUSSION CLASS OF 2019***

Sorry this may be have been asked and answered but I don’t want to read through all these pages, but when do we expect to hear the decision? Thanks!

March 31st probably at 5pm

Thank you! We will be vacationing so even it’s a rejection, we at least are in Hawaii to enjoy some sun and beach!

I’m definitely going into this one expecting a rejection so that way, if anything better happens, I will have exceeded expectations and will therefore be happy.

I’m just curious as to what people wrote for their Penn supplement (if you don’t mind sharing)

@pedestrian1123 Do you mind sharing what you wrote about? Here’s what I wrote about…

I started off my essay with a couple of paragraphs describing what it was like caring for my grandfather who had Alzheimer’s Disease and how that impacted me and is a big part of who I am and what I want to do.

Then I discussed why I want to go to CAS, including the unique atmosphere there and my desire to contribute to society by doing some research in Alzheimer’s Disease while at Penn. I also discussed Penn’s Alzheimer’s disease center and some of the research studies that neuroscience professors at UPenn (such as Professor Bonini) have conducted.

I then went on to talk about some of the other activities that i want to be involved in at Penn such as Sailing, A Cappella, Penn Masti, etc. (I know this wasn’t really in the prompt but I figured it wouldn’t hurt)

I ended with a statement about how Penn will help me to grow and make the contributions that I want to make and how until I can be a part of such a community I will continue to read all of the books in my local library and live in jealousy of the incredible research opportunities that my boyfriend receives at Penn.

I wrote essentially the same thing but I didn’t really go into activities other than the ones I feel that I can impact society with. More world view rather than social for me. It may work out It may not best of luck!

I essentially wrote the same thing but for my field. I talked about my interests in my field, what Penn could offer me, how I could utilize it, and then added something at the end about an interest outside my field and how I could contribute it into my field.

@rippedfishnets What is your field?

Lol I told a cute story about myself as a kid. Basically the theme was that I love to be inspired by things, and that I know I can find that inspiration at Penn as well. The most specific I got was talking about the major I want to do, tbh.

@marshmallowpop haha I wish I had made my essay more entertaining. That probably would have helped. I just hope my essay makes sense to the readers :confused:

I talked about how getting into and studying for Academic Decathlon has shaped me to be the person today, and ended it by comparing AD to CAS, since in AD there are 7 core subjects that you have to study for and in CAS they also have 7 core subjects that you have to take courses in. Basically, the only difference was that instead of studying these subjects with a group of 9 kids, I’d have an entire university. I got a likely letter in February which said that the reason they sent it was because of my essay!

Mine was a lot more straightforward; I talked about how I’ve been involved in community service throughout high school. Then, I gave 2-3 examples of how Penn would allow me to continue that tradition before finally tying it up with a paragraph about how I want to help my home state.

It’s fairly straightforward, but it outlined my goals at CAS. I just hope that it’s not overly boring…

I wrote about Penn’s strong linguistics program, which I’m interested in, but that I would also be able to pursue other interests and have both breadth and depth in my education. I realize that this is a fairly typical essay about Penn, but I hope highlighting my passion for linguistics and anything related to language made it more personal.

Oh, and I realized a few weeks after submitting that my common app essay had a typo (“takings breaks” instead of “taking breaks”), so I hope they take my interest in language seriously haha. (I keep reminding myself about an article that claims that broken speech patterns cause people to pay closer attention to the speaker and remember what they said- maybe the same holds true for a typo in writing :smile: )

@Alpaca97 if you are nervous about your typo, Google clam fart and click on the first link

@humbleapplicant politics

@rippedfishnets clam fart was the best thing that ever happened to CC (we’re allowed to say that because the OP got in)

I’d give anything to know what the committee thought immediately after reading “clam fart”…

Okay so I need some help. I applied regular decision to Penn and submitted my FAFSA on time. For some reason, I thought that was the only thing I needed to complete to apply for Financial Aid. However, I got on their website today because I have a research project over it, and I found that I also could’ve submitted my parents tax returns, the PFAS, and the CSS/PROFILE. At the top it says," *** If you intended to apply for only federal and/or state financial assistance, you need only submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by the appropriate federal and/or state deadlines. The FAFSA is used to determine your eligibility for federal and state student financial aid programs." Does this mean that I won’t get any help from Penn’s 100% coverage of student need, or will I be able to submit these forms late and have my financial aid awarded with those forms in consideration. I’m genuinely worrying right now because I really though I only had to submit the FAFSA.

Anyone else apply to the huntsman program?

If we applied to a dual degree and didn’t receive a likely letter, does that mean we didn’t get into it?
