Penn state 2+2 program

Is the acceptance of 2+2 program higher?

Also, how competitive is hospitality management in PSU?

It’s not a guaranteed 2+2. You get accepted to a branch campus and after two years if you meet the requirements then you apply to UP. Nothing is guaranteed

@airway1 Actually, if you meet the UP entrance to major requirements, you are automatically able to transfer to UP for your last 2 years. You do not need to apply. However, there are some majors (nursing and perhaps some others) that do not transfer to UP.

@MPCH0822 Yes, admission to a commonwealth campus is much easier (less competitive) than admission to main campus.

@kidzncatz So how can I apply for other campuses? All campuses are at the same application website.

Are there any differences between graduating in main campus and graduating in other campuses?

Also, is hospitality management competitive in PSU ?

@kidzncatz wouldn’t you need to do something on LionPATH? I didn’t think it was automatic transfer to UP

@MPCH0822 This major is offered at UP and Berks campuses, though the 1st 2 years can be completed at any campus with transfer to UP or Berks for the last 2 years. You choose a first and second choice campus on the application. I don’t know how competitive the major is; I would guess not overly competitive.

@airway1 I don’t know the specific process of moving from a commonwealth campus to UP, but do know it is a guaranteed transfer as long as entrance to major requirements are met.

If you don’t think you’re competitive for UP, you choose Altoona or Harrisburg or Erie/Behrend as first choice and Abington or Greater Allegheny or another smaller branch with dorms as second choice.

@MYOS1634 Are there any differences between graduate from main campus and other campuses

@MPCH0822 I noticed when reading your other threads that finances are an important issue and that you were considering CUNY community colleges because of low cost. Be advised that Penn State, both main campus and commonwealth campuses, is expensive, especially for out of state students, and financial aid is poor to non-existent. Cost of attendance (including room and board) at Penn State main campus for out of state students is about $50,000 a year. Even at the other campuses, cost of attendance is close fo $40,000 a year. Since it appears that you are a New York resident, the CUNY and SUNY schools will be much more affordable choices.

@kidzncatz Budget is not a big issue now. Now I treat CUNY as a back up plan, cause I think study in 2-years CC is comparatively risky (I don’t want to find another college after 2 year, also the learning atmosphere in CC is…not good) , and I think I can get into a better college( at least not CC).

I’m not a New York resident, I’m an international student. I consider nyc’s college is just because some close friends live there, so I can easily seek help from them if necessary:) However, there are not too many colleges have Hospitality management. So I decided to apply other colleges in different states.

Btw, does penn state cares high school GPA a lot? I’m so worried about it.
Because the educational system in my city is totally different from USA
In USA, you grade will be C if you got 70sth in the exam…right?
But in my home city, your grade will be C if you got 45 in the exam. If you got 70 in the exam, your grade will be A or above…Turn out my gpa will be terribly low …it is so unfair to me…

What should I do? Should I explain the grades my personal essay?
Will penn state take the English language proficiency test as reference?
(I got 7/9 in IELTS)
Can SAT score take over the GPA?

The PSU branch campuses are kind of like CCs, but specific to preparing to transfer to PSU, and much more expensive than typical CCs.

@MPCH0822 Penn State admissions understands the grading systems of foreign countries, so international students are evaluated based on their countries’ systems, not by American grading systems. If you are interested in Penn State, I would suggest that you apply with your first choice of campus UP (main campus) and 2nd choice Harrisburg (if you’d like to be with a larger percentage of international students) or Berks (just in case you want to stay there all 4 years).

@ucbalumnus It’s safer than typical CC

are there any differences between graduating from Berks and university park?

This is absolutely not true. The commonwealth campuses have the exact same class requirements as the students at UP campus and several of the commonwealth campuses are 4 years colleges in their own right. Some of the commonwealth campuses even have majors unavailable at UP campus. There are SOME of the commonwealth campuses that are more similar to a community college and only have 2 year degrees, or are made up of commuters. But that is not true across the board. PSU Harrisburg, Altoona and Behrend are 4 year colleges on their own, as are several others. I wouldn’t recommend some of the commonwealth campuses for OOS students, but the above three have plenty of OOS students.

Your degree will say Penn State University. Your transcript will show where you took classes - but I’ve never had any employer ask for a copy of my transcript.

Will the 2+2 plan show up automatically once they accept me?

Or I have to apply for transition to main campus after 2 years in commonwealth campus?

Or will they ask me to start at commonwealth campus and ends at commonwealth campus?

@jlhpsu yea, that’s weird if the employer ask for a copy of your transcript

When you get your decision, if you are accepted to the commonwealth campus, it will say which campus you have been accepted to. In two years, you transition to main campus if you’ve met the entry to major requirements. For many majors, that’s only a 2.0 GPA and certain classes. In other majors, it can be much much more difficult (finance is a 3.5 GPA). That being said, if you don’t meet the entry to major requirements for your major, you can always transfer to a major that doesn’t have any except the 2.0 grade point average and transition up to main campus anyway. It’s pretty typical that students start at a commonwealth campus and automatically transition after two years. There are forms to fill out etc…but it’s not an application as much as it is a process. The application is to a certain major at the end of sophomore year, but that is also fluid.

What campus did you apply to and in what major?
