Penn State Accepted Student Programs

For the Accepted Students Programs for the various schools (Liberal Arts, etc), do most students participate with their parents/families? Or, do most kids go on their own to the info sessions and panels?

Hi we went 2 yrs ago and it was parent and student together.

My daughter was accepted into college of communications at University Park. She is very excited about this acceptance however now she is unsure what she wants to major in at PSU. Is there an opportunity at the accepted students orientation to talk to someone about switching to DUS? Thanks

On a side note, students who commit will also be required to return to campus for New Student Orientation (NSO) between end of May and July to meet with an adviser or someone to help them schedule their fall classes. Families who live far away can understandably get upset about purchasing two back-to-back plane tickets. If you can only attend one event and know you definitely want Penn State and don’t need another sales job, save the plane ticket for NSO. In some cases, like with international students, you can schedule courses when you arrive in August–but by then many course sections are full or deemed less desirable.

@psurequestion That would be better accomplished at new student orientation. Accepted students day is really just like another tour and information session geared towards students who’ve yet to make up their minds on attending.

At NSO your daughter should be able to change her major to DUS without issue.

Thank you!

We just returned from admitted student day for DUS. I must say it was so well run and very informative. I was super impressed with what DUS has to offer and think it’s a great opportunity for any student to figure out what they really want to do. My son originally applied Smeal and we worried he wouldn’t get in so we switched to DUS. I am so happy he did. Based on my understanding he will have the opportunity to change to any school/major as long as he takes the core classes with grades of C and an overall 3,2 (higher for a few other majors). Not sure if other universities have programs like DUS, but this program moved penn state up to my number 1 spot.

@jjely44 A lot of schools have them these days. Rutgers and Maryland to name a few. They can’t offer you the major you applied for and then enroll you in a general undecided program in which you can go through the entrance to major courses and formally apply to the department.

They go with their parents. Just got back from one.
