Penn State DISCUSSION THREAD Fall 2022 Admission

how long did it take to get it back

Congrats. So you submitted a request to change your major last wed and received an acceptance the following Thursday? That was quick!

Congratulations. So happy for you!

D was accepted to the five year architecture program at UP. She is very excited.

I actually called on Wednesday this week. So my decision came back the next day, which was way faster than I was expecting.

I got my decision back in about a day, which I think is very uncommon as they told me it would be 4-6 weeks after the break.

Congratulations to your D!!! My D was just accepted as well for the Arts and Architecture college - Digital Arts & Media Design. She is so thrilled. Her sister is currently there in Schreyers and her dad is an Alum so we weā€™re hoping for good news.

TO button did disappear the night before around 7:pm. Good luck to all!

Thatā€™s fantastic to hear so soon. Will keep our fingers crossed for a quick decision also. Did you send an email also or just call?

Congrats to your son, Senthil

I sent an email originally but the person I emailed messed up and considered me for DUS at Altoona instead of at UP. So I needed to call and change once again to be DUS at UP for fall, I would definitely recommend calling as I think things can sometimes get lost or misinterpreted over email.

Congratulations! So happy it worked out for you.

Maybe thatā€™s why our Naviance is so useless. D17 has never shown as accepted to her school, it has never shown anyone ever accepted at MIT, though her classmate is currently a Senior. Same with previous students at Harvard and Yale. I would think counselors would want to make it known students were accepted to these schools.

D22s PSU acceptance isnā€™t currently shown. Iā€™m going to ask her to update it and see what happens.

Thank you

Thatā€™s not really an accurate definition of deferred at most schools. Deferred means that they have reviewed your application but havenā€™t made an admissions decision. They may want to wait to see other applications before deciding if yours should be an acceptance, waitlist, or rejection. They need to see your application in the context of the larger group before rendering a decision.

Thatā€™s true for most schools, but not for Penn State. What we see is what Iā€™ve described: they seem to use a waitlist (when they have one) the same way other schools use the term ā€œdeferredā€.

Best of luck to everyone waiting, no matter what itā€™s called.

Just saw PSU may go virtual for spring. If that happens, there will definitely be at least one spot from an accepted opened up. I will not be paying 50k for virtual college! lol

Agreed. Penn State just moved from the top of our list to the bottom.

and @terpmom13 My S19 was waitlisted at Harvard and Columbia but offered a very generous merit scholarship at the other big PA school, Pitt. 2020 and the pandemic hit and he was all virtual but was able to drive to Pitt (we are nearby) and do his only in-person class, a bio lab. What a blessing in disguise not getting off the waitlists!! In 2020, Harvard only allowed freshman and seniors on campus. I would have been paying $75K+ for my sophomore to cyber from Pittsburgh. Everything is meant to be and the lesson we learned is donā€™t underestimate schools that are closer to your hometown. D22 only wants to go to a university close to home  Sheā€™s already ruled out her PSU acceptance.

When do scholarship notifications happen? (February, March, or ?)
I know merit scholarships are rare but just want to know when my D can rule out getting one.

Exactly. We live in a blue state (not PA) and have been monitoring this closely. Our son also got into Auburn, along with a nice academic scholarship, and although we wanted it to be his decision, we wanted him in a red state to avoid this potential. Even just the worry and constant uncertainty is so unhealthy.

We finally had to flat out tell him if Penn State backslides and does this, itā€™s no longer an option, sadly.
