Penn State Early Action for Fall 2024 Admissions

I was wondering the same about nursing but so far I haven’t seen any nursing acceptances within this chat. The deadline for nursing applications are technically 12/1 per PSU nursing website so I am assuming they will release some after the 12/1 deadline just like they did with early action after 11/1. My daughter had her application in for early action not realizing there was a 12/1 nursing application deadline. If you scroll down you will the the specific date for pre-med and nursing. Hopefully some updates before 12/24! Fingers crossed!

Thank you so much. I totally missed December 1 date thinking it’s same as EA. I was constantly checking the portal while others were writing about acceptances. Huh…

Does anybody know if I emailed admissions and got my intended major switched to DUS a few days ago, which is obviously after the EA deadline, if I will still be considered EA? I was considered EA before I switched, so I’m guessing I still am?

I have the same question. We just switched to DUS 2 days ago

So can you clarify something - if a student applies directly to Smeal and they don’t get admitted direct admit, are they given the option to enter as DUS or are they rejected from Penn state outright?

I have two who applied to Penn state UP. One applied in early October to Smeal, the other applied in late October to IST- data science. The one who applied later to IST was admitted yesterday:

ACT: 33
GPA: 3.7
Number of Honors/AP Courses: 3 AP, all the rest a mix of Honors and non Honors
Rank: n/a
State Residency: In-state

Applied date: SRAR completed 10/25, ACT report ordered 10/26
Applied Early Action: yes
Decision date: 11/15
Major Applied to/Accepted: Data Science
Decision/College: Accepted, IST
Campus applied to/Campus accepted to: University Park

They are denied - you then immediately call and request a re evaluation for DUS (if relevant “+summer”)

Hello everyone. Can I ask if you are accepted to another campus like Scranton for Smeal, can you deny it and ask to go into dus consideration? Excuse my lack of knowledge here, I’m learning about Penn.

Yes, you can ask for reconsideration DUS/UP, though if you really want UP asking for DUS+Summer is safer since 2nd round DUS has become more competitive- you have all the other students in the same boat as you being re-evaluated for DUS so it’s more competitive than for 1st round DUS.

Do you think you can ask that for transfer students too? I have one applying for Freshman fall, but my older son applied to transfer January from another university. They gave him Altoona. He was trying to transfer into engineering.

Thank you! You are such a great resource! Can I ask if I have my son send in for summer start now for Smeal, does he lose the early application status since it’s after November 1.

He is out of state. Not sure what batch he was in, but he did find out 11/16

Do you know when he applied?

I’ll defer to @jlhpsu on the matter of transfers.

Is he transferring for Sophomore year (15-29 credits), freshman admission (12 university credits or fewer), or as a 2nd year student going into Jr year?
I think it matters but am not sure.

Generally speaking, Behrend is seen as stronger for Engineering than Altoona.

No, switching from Fall start to Summer start (LEAP) wouldn’t affect EA status if all materials were in by Nov 1 and the application is still under review. You can just call and say he’d like to start in the summer and do LEAP.
LEAP is fantastic (I don’t know any kid who did it and regretted it) but it’s costly.

Thank you, yes I asked around and leap sounds like a great opportunity to ease the transition into college.

I know Penn State is notoriously stingy with merit. If by chance we would get anything (OOS) when do they notify? Or is the only hope the $5 K you get for Schreyer? Daughter is high stats but doubt will apply to Schreyer.

My son was invited to apply. He currently isn’t thinking he wants to do it. I told him to go ahead and apply and he can make his final decision in March if he was to happen to get in. This way he is possibly has the option.

You might be invited to For the Glory weekend, which indicates they’re considering the applicants for a scholarship (I don’t think actually going to that weekend guarantees anything though so don’t invest in it unless you just want to go visit.)

So, on the one hand…
Schreyer is one of the top honors colleges nationally. Not only do Honors students get a 4-year housing guarantee with excellent central dorms&activities, a ready-made community (not a small advantage on a large campus), special cohort activities and opportunities (like a leadership class you can apply to in the summer), priority registration allows them to get the classes they want with the best professors and at the times they are most productive. So it’s not just the 5k.
On the other hand, there are about 8,000 freshmen. Only 300 of them are in Schreyer. And essays are paramount. So it’s not just “apply on a whim and get a scholarship”.
IMHO, the ROI time spent on essays::benefits is really worth it, especially for kids aiming for colleges with sub 25% acceptance rates - if they don’t get into these colleges or the college doesn’t end up being affordable, then getting into Schreyer “makes up” for it in many ways.

He is transferring in as a Freshman. He will start January, with 17 credits. They told me if it was under 18, he is still considered a 1st year student. He chose Altoona, because it was relatively close to Main.
