When do decisions regarding the honors college go out? Does that decision come with the acceptance letter?

I know that there is a separate app for Schreyer's.....is there a different honors program at PSU-U park?

Rodney:

As far as I am aware, there is no “honors” program at Penn State other than Shreyers Honors Program, which requires a separate application [How to Apply: Schreyer Honors College](404 Error: Page Not Found - Schreyer Honors College (SHC) at Penn State University)

Thanks, pamom…as I thought…

On the contrary, there are honors programs in some departments and these may qualify you for gateway admission to Schreyer’s.

^^SC bob: could you provide a link please? Are these honors programs for incoming freshman?

rodney,

Here are a couple of examples:

The Honors Program in Economics (usually junior or senior year).

The Smeal College of Business has their Sapphire Leadership Program. (This is available to freshmen)

I’m sure there are others you just need to look.

sC: thanks; I’m specifically referring to incoming freshman programs.but thank you for the Sapphire link; looks like that app is later on in spring for fall admits…

I would think it might be helpful to incoming applicants to know which of these programs they are eligible for and what they need to do to apply; Schreyer’s is straightforward…

Tx again…

rodney

You didn’t say what your area’s of interest are but here is one additional program I know of off the top of my head…

Engineering Science Honors Program
Since 1953, Engineering Science has been the honors program for the Penn State College of Engineering.

Greetings all! I thought I should drop in and answer these questions.

(1) We will be emailing acceptance letters in the first week of March.

(2) Schreyer Honors College is the primary means of achieving honors at Penn State. There are three exceptions at University Park: Engineering Sciences, English, and Econ. Most students in these areas, which predate the Scholars Program and were thus “grandparented” in, also enter the SHC via the Gateway, as SCBob pointed out.

For those in Liberal Arts who do not get into the SHC as a first year student, you may consider the Paterno Fellows Program. This also leads to entry into the SHC as a Gateway student. (Sapphire is an enhancement program and not an honors program. Students may be in both or either SHC and Sapphire if they are in Smeal College of Business.)

I hope that helps! Any questions, just contact us: [Contact Admissions: Schreyer Honors College](404 Error: Page Not Found - Schreyer Honors College (SHC) at Penn State University)

dean_brady, when are the applications for the sapphire program available? are freshmen students only able to apply by invite? how does that process work?

Hi realtaaalk,

The Sapphire Leadership Program is going to be mailing out invitations to apply by the end of this month. Freshmen students can only get into the program by invitation, but we are starting a junior gate program that will allow any motivated junior Smeal student to apply to the Sapphire Leadership Program.

Basically, we invite freshmen to apply, and they then have to write a couple essays on selected topics and get recommendations from teachers for their application. We then accept about 80 students per class that we feel best represents the best and brightest in Smeal.

If you have any other questions, feel free to post them here or contact us directly at sapphireleadershipprogram@ g mail .com (have to break emails up on here!)

Thanks!
