I am applying for the nursing program at University Park, and was wondering about some admission information. Specifically I was wondering if I was denied admission to UP Nursing if I would still have the opportunity to attend UP instead of a branch campus. I understand that if I was denied I would not be able to do nursing at UP however I was wondering if I was accepted to my secondary campus for nursing (Altoona) I would lose the chance to attend UP under a different major instead of going into nursing.
From what I’ve read from past years it seems that if you get rejected from a particularly selective major you can call and ask to be re-evaluated for something like DUS. I applied to Smeal and if I don’t get accepted I’m going to call and ask to be reconsidered for DUS.
You can call and ask to be reevaluated for UP campus in a different major. From what I understand you don’t lose your acceptance at the branch campus to do that. If you get in, great - if not, you still have your branch campus acceptance. Double check that with admissions though - every year they change procedures so it’s best to make sure your info is up to date.
Okay, thank you. Do you know if reevaluation will significantly decrease my chance of admission at UP?
If your family can swing it, consider putting summer down as a back up too. Sometimes kids on the bubble will be admitted for summer, but it can cost upwards of $8k to do the summer LEAP program.
If you don’t get UP, just call same day and ask for the re-evaluation. It shouldn’t hurt you. DUS will fill up, so don’t wait too long.
On a side note, if being at UP is more important than being in the nursing program, you may want to reconsider nursing. The program is really tough and a big commitment. It takes a special person to look beyond all the bodily fluids and early morning clinical rotations. Nursing students don’t have the same freedom as other students. It’s definitely not Greys Anatomy.
