Penn State or Ohio State or Texas A&M

Hi Guys, i received letters yesterday, i got admitted to Penn State and Ohio State and Texas A&M for Computer Science, as an international student from Vietnam. I've been looking for advises weeks ago between OSU and Texas A&M, but now i have another chance, Penn State. Which school should i choose? it seems like PSU have more beautiful campus, better dorms than OSU :)) guys have any advises ? I'm really confused, i love outdoor activities, social experience, urban, fresh atmosphere. How about people friendliness toward international student there ? i visited A&M last week and people there are very friendly, how about in OSU, PSU. tks a lots. Oh and Btw, which one have prettier, nicer girls =]]] just wondering

Penn State hasn’t even opened applications for this year yet, how is it you’ve been admitted

apply soon for spring semester , the deadline is October 1. they allow international student to apply soon because i have to go back to my country to do some Visa stuffs

Penn State is in a college town (a town where everything is geared toward college students). The campus is huge, there’s a even a free shuttle to go from one end to the other. The campus is very pretty, with green lawns and trees. THere are tons of student groups and people are generally friendly. If you like OSU you’d probably like Penn State, but it’s very different in atmosphere and landscaping from A&M.
Penn State’s biggest draw is that it has the biggest alumni network in the US.
Additionally, for breaks, you can easily travel to New York City, Baltimore, and Philadelphia - they have buses for students.
At OSU you can also easily travel to various cities, Cleveland, Pittsburgh… but for the big east coast cities it’s a little farther away.

Depends on what you’re studying. If engineering, A&M is definitely the best school, at least academically.

tks MYOS1634, so in your opinion, which place is better ? Do they have any shopping mall or fastfood or restaurant near PennState, what would u choose if you were me :)) i like them both

and how is the weather in Ohio and Penn from September to May, that’s fall and spring semester :)) i guess it’s very cold there

PSU has been on a slump. However, OSU is improving every day! They are on the list of most improving school by USNWR. The school is already in the top 60. However, like I mentioned it is improving so it can break into the top 50. Besides rankings (shouldn’t make your decision based of it), OSU is in Columbus a very nice city. If i would have to pick between the three it would be OSU followed by PSU and then TAMU

Not familiar with OSU, but PSU is a great college town. The town is adjacent to the campus with many stores and restaurants directly across from campus. There are more larger stores in town with free buses that circle the campus and go into parts of town. It is very socially oriented with a lot of activities going on.

One thing to note is that the weather at OSU and PSU is very cold in the winter-we are from California and my D had a hard time getting used to the extreme cold and snow and being stuck inside at times during the winter. She was OK with it but it definitely was something to adjust to. Texas can also get cold, but nothing like the other 2 campuses. A&M might be better if you are an engineering major.

Overall no significant differences among them. OSU is in the largest city–others in small towns. That is the biggest diff. Quality wise really very close.

I would hesitate between Penn state and OSU. It depends on what you’re looking for.
I’d say the alumni network is a huge draw since engineers can use internships.
weather is about the same. depends what you call very cold. September and October are warm and crisp, November it’s 5-10 Celsius and humid, Dec Jan Feb. you have snow and temps below zero Celsius from time to time, March and April it’s a mix between snow and thaw and them on it’s warm and sunny.
state college the town where Penn state is located is a college town so it has everything students may want: lots of restaurants, several movie theaters, a place to go to basketball games and rock concerts, stores that students favor … yes there is a typical mall, another mall with a Target and other big stores, a wallmart that is one of the most something - most profitable perhaps? - and a good bus system to go everywhere.

It also depends where you see yourself doing your internshp - in. Texas? Rather on the coasts? directly where the university is located or in a big city - Osu is better for internships righter there. and PSU for internships in Philadelphia or such.
Also be aware that there’s a rivalry between PSU and OSU so some posters may try to go ‘we are the best’ just to put down a rival :)8-)

What does this even mean?

I hope this is not an important factor in choosing your education. There are places to shop and places to eat at any school you go to.

Tks guys, those cmt are very helpful i took a trip to PSU yesterday , it’s completely beautiful, i love the atmosphere, buildings =]] except i’m really afraid of the climate in winter there :frowning: 5-10 Celsius is fine but under zero is a huge problem to me.I also talked to a student, he’s from Texas and he said he was going to transfer to another school bc he can’t stand the winter there . I’ve been living in San Francisco for over a year and i kinda love the weather there, anyone suggest me any schools in the mid or in the south at the same academic level at Penn State with fresh environment, green space, new buildings with mild weather like Cali about 5-30 Celsius is good to me

Green and mild = Oregon Washington state. However there aren’t schools with the reputation in engineering that the three schools you’ve been admitted to. U Washington is good overall. green etc.
Ohio and pa. aren’t Massachusetts, Maine or Minnesota. I don’t think weather should scare you. in addition since you’re full pay if you really dislike the weather you can easily transfer. since it sounds like the Penn state campus and atmosphere really met what you were looking for in a school it’d be too bad to let a fear keep of Winter keep you from trying.

Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Clemson, UCSD all have better weather and great engineering schools.

i think i will try it MYOS1634, since i have my 2 knee’s surgeries, it’s very painful when outside turns cold, how long does it snow in Penn State i mean from when to when, i forgot to ask students there

You can expect 4 months of snow on the ground (not 4 months snowing :p, I’d say it snows 5-6 times in the winter with once or twice being “bad” but not so bad they close the school).
But if mild weather is an imperative, look into Virginia Tech or NCSU - however its hot and humid in the summer so I don’t know how that would affect you.

There’s an average of around 46 inches of snow per year in State College. Most happens in January and February historically.

NC State does have a very strong engineering program and our winters here in NC aren’t nearly as bad as they are at VT and upwards. Recently its been fairly rare to drop below freezing.

This is a serious problem. You should remove PSU and OSU from the list immediately.

Consider colleges in California, Texas, Florida, NC etc. Someone already mentioned NCSU, it has a highly ranked engineering program and its relatively cheap for out of state students.

You should be considered in-state for California public Universities. Was you high school in CA ?
