Penn State or UConn?!?

I'm going to be a freshman in the fall and I've been accepted into both Uconn and Penn State, University Park. I've been accepted into the Communications schools for both, but don't know which to pick... I really like them both! I'm preppy, into sports, fitness, and enjoy partying and meeting new people so I think either would be a good fit. Which school is better overall (education, overall vibe, campus, type of people) and which has a better communications program?

education: both same level
overall vibe: Penn State (BIG 10)
campus: similar (both rural and large land area)
type of people: similar
which has a better communications program? : Penn State
enjoy partying and meeting new people: Penn state

Penn State: 25th percentile 1620 75th percentile 1940 Average SAT- 1780

UConn: 25th percentile 1680 75th percentile 1950 Average SAT- 1820

Both have very similar stats and similar acceptance rate.
Are you in-state for either ?
Since they are similar in so many ways making a decision without visiting both is impossible. If you are not able to visit then choose the cheaper one.

I went to PSU and I’ve visited UConn. The one advantage I could see off the bat is that PSU has a much nicer college town. So even though it’s rural, there seems to be more to do. But I agree that they have a lot in common, and if you’re in-state for one, that would be your pick.

I’m out of state for both schools

They only have $328 difference in tuition i.e UConn costs $328 more.
PSU Total Cost(including room and board) : $31,002 (in-state); $43,084 (out-of-state)
UConn Total Cost(including room and board) : $26,122 (in-state); $43,954 (out-of-state)

So, both are very expensive…Did you get scholarships from either ? Did you get accepted to any other college ? What state do you live in ?

Xtreme did a good compare and contrast for you, but, and I may be prejudiced, I don’t think you can beat PSU. Remember, they have an excellent alumni networking system to aid in internships and jobs. I hope you pick Penn State because I think you’re going to love it! Let us know!

Xtreme–where does the $31k in-state cost for Penn State come from? Tuition is is around $16k for in-state at University Park, and Room&Board is around $10k. Even if you tack on $2k for books you don’t get to $31k.

Just curious how you arrived at that figure.

Transportation costs a lot, and some other personal expenses but you are right…lets make that 28k which is still crazy expensive for a instate public lol

If you’re fratty, pick PSU. Greek life at PSU is one of the most active in the country, the town is much more college friendly, way more school spirit, and a much deeper alumni base

Xtreme…most expensive in-state public school in the country! Thank you Commonwealth of Pennsylvania!

But having said that, it is still where our oldest son will be attending this fall.

PSU by far

@Waiting The most expensive public in state schools are the California schools.

@etuck lol how ? the UC’s are around 12k and Cal State are around 7k. That’s nowhere near 17k at PSU.

Well if you’re only looking at tuition maybe. But UC’s looks more expensive all around

According to the College Affordability and Transparency Center ([College Affordability and Transparency Center](http://collegecost.ed.gov/catc/Default.aspx#)), the California state schools don’t even crack the top 30 for most expensive in-state tuition rates.

Of course Penn State occupies 20 of the top 35 spots since their branch campus tuition rates aren’t much cheaper than University Park. And Pennsylvania can be proud of having 23 of the top 35 with Pitt, Pennsylvania College of Technology (part of Penn State now) and Temple on the list too.

Definitely uconn

Im debating a similar situation, except for accounting, and Case Western is also in the mix. I am also out of state for both, but in terms of uconn vs. Penn state i am leaning toward penn state just because Smeal has a good reputation.
