Penn State is known for work hard, play hard. I have quite a few Penn State alumni at my grad school, including my roommate (they are all over the freakin’ place because there are so many of them!) and they are all super-smart and have won numerous awards. But they are always the ones getting the party started, too. The social chair for our SGA for the last two years has been a Penn State alumna, lol.

But like I said, work hard, play hard. They have a strong reputation all over. I’d say their reputation is stronger than Maryland’s.

Penn State has a very good reputation in the US, some may argue that a Penn State degree is more reputable than one from Maryland…looks like the party school atmosphere isn’t affecting Penn State’s name with employers.

I think they are both great schools but I’d have to give the edge to UMD, simply for its close promixity to D.C., a city that has great opportunities for business internships/jobs.

I would say PSU (I’m biased though, my brother goes there, 2 of my cousins went there, and my mom went there) because of it’s extremely large network.

Not to mention they have really good ice cream at the creamery! (4 days from cow to cone)

And come on, a nittany lion is sooo much better than a turtle.

barrons,
Do you think the large size of Smeal (5,943) might hamper the effectiveness of the career service? How do you handle on campus recruitment effectively?

I think size would not help overall. Most firms are only looking for a few people per campus and just because you have 1000 accting grads does not mean the Big 4 will hire 500 of them–just too many from one place.

But I have heard numerous complaints about placement service at UMD. And not so about PSU.
