Im a freshman at Penn State in the business school, and although my grades are fine (~3.6), I dont like the school. Too secluded and rural. So i was just curious if anyone had any insight as to whether it would be worth transferring to pitt to be in a city with urban amenities and sacrifice the 'prestige' of penn states business school. thanks

This is definitely a strange transfer, betraying PSU for Pitt. For me personally, I would probably not transfer from a school with a strong B school to a school with a weak B school. I went to Pitt for a year and I was not impressed with the CBA at all, the students there were not very serious and it seemed like something people did if they didn’t know what they wanted to do with their lives. I found the classes easy and kind of a joke. I don’t quite know the situation at Penn St but I left Pitt in part because of how unimpressed I was with the B school.

Additionally, if you look at this from a broader perspective, you’ll see that PSU is rank #1 by recruiters while Pitt is #36 according to them. The academic quality ranking is 73 to 67, teaching quality is B to C, facilities grade is A to B, and the job placement grade is A+ to C, with PSU in front in most of them. Also, PSU’s median starting salary is $55,000 to $44,750 at Pitt. You’ll be sacrificing quite a bit of PSU’s recruiting advantages by leaving for Pitt, which is what I believe makes it really not worth it.

Having a good, enjoyable environment is extremely important for college and I understand that the atmosphere of the place matters a lot. I’m kind of the opposite of you in that I didn’t like the urban environment of Pitt and prefer a more traditional campus setting, kind of like PSU’s. It was another reason why I left. But honestly, I think that unless you are really unhappy at PSU and need a change in scenery, you’re better off staying there. You seem to be doing fine academically and if you are also doing fine socially and emotionally, you should simply stay since it seems Pitt only has one major advantage over PSU. Anyways, good luck and I hope everything works out for you.

Thanks for the response!
And honestly, Im not exactly impressed with penn state thus far. It has a pretty building but nothing I’ve seen to be able to justify the rankings. Plus this whole place has a very distinct cult feel to it. Really only something you can understand if you go here and dont ‘bleed blue and white’, and are moreover looking for an education. But thanks for a response and I’ll be sure to weigh youre input during my decision making process in the coming months.
Again, thanks!

Hey there, fellow Nittany Lion! I’m in the Business school, as well, hoping to transfer to another university out of state. I totally understand how you feel about this town…it’s just…(no further comment lol). I’m constantly feeling miserable in this small town and I don’t like the small town environment; I feel that it doesn’t bring out the best of me. Everything is just so slow…a little too slow here. Nevertheless, PSU is an awesome school for the in-state price. I know Smeal is definitely more “prestigious” compared to Pitt. I have friends who go to Pitt and transferred to Penn State and hated it, vice versa.

I love schools with big spirits, but the whole social scene isn’t what I imagined for a small town. But I’ll definitely miss all my great friends I’ve made here so far. Honestly, if you feel like you will be much happier and you will work harder at Pitt, then go for it. I know many people here will go by rankings and tell you to choose PSU, but it’s completely up to you in the end. PSU Smeal does indeed have amazing recruiting, especially for Finance/Accounting for east coast cities. I don’t really want to work in the east coast which is another reason why I want to get out of here. Anyway, good luck with everything and I hope everything works out! I’m dying to get out of State College…

wow djpsu2015 thank you for validating me… i literally could not have said it better myself. and yeahh i came her for the rankings, not gonna lie 2012 undergrad business school rankings come out tomorrow tho! and the reason pitt is my best option is because its close to home and its the biggest city where i could go instate (drexel or temple arent exactly great, and nova is a bit expensive) but i know exactly what you mean leaving the state. i applied to/got into UMinn, St Johns (in NYC) and DePaul (chicago) because a big city is definitely where i feel comfortable yet still find the drive to do well, yet provisionally/financially (merit/scholarship aid for transfer students…loljk), Pitt just made the most sense . plus i know some people that go there and like it a lot. but good luck to you as well! psu is definitely amazing on paper, but state college and the overtly ‘we are…!’ mentality just arent really what i thought theyd be. this place has its charm but enough to tie me down here for 4 years. but again, good luck in your search!!
