Penn State University Park tour experience

Just got back from Penn State (University Park) and want to share my experience. I went with my daughter who will be a freshman this summer. We both fell in love with campus. It really is just beautiful! We had a great tour guides - both seniors so they had a lot of interesting info.

There are many dining options - a great variety of food. The student center is huge and really nice. There were students everywhere just hanging out and all seemed happy!

Downtown is literally across the street from the campus which is great for the students! School spirit is incredibly strong - PSU students are very proud of their school. In addition, we found the students to be very nice and eager to talk talk to us. It was like they wanted to make sure we knew how great the school was. Also, they kept saying how easy it was to make friends and highly recommended attending the leap program in the summer.

There is no need for a car - freshman are not permitted - both tour guides who I mentioned were seniors did not have cars. The school has great bus systems that take you everywhere - we tested them out and it was great.

The only negative we found were the dorms. We actually saw the East dorms and they are old and very small. In addition, they are far from everything. Freshman really lose out when it comes to dorms. I would recommend looking into a special living option. We met some current freshman who highly advised my daughter NOT to live in East halls and said not to worry that she would still get the freshman experience living in other dorms.

I’m glad you had a good visit cr2012! If you’re looking for nice dorms, I would highly recommend south halls. I stayed overnight with students in the honors college during the fall for a football game, and their dorm was in South. Their dorm was the nicest I’ve seen of any college that I’ve visited: large room with lots of space and big closets as well.

Yes, State College has a very active and interesting downtown that is directly across the street from many major buildings of the University.

One of the many reasons for students to apply to the Honors College is because of the residence halls. Not only are they nice, but they are conveniently located.

cr2012, You might take a look at the Special Living Options (SLOs). My son lived in E-House, for engineering students, for two years. It s in West and he had a spacious room with lots of built-ins. It was also close to Hammond, where many ENGR classes meet, and across from Rec Hall. Other SLOs are conveniently located for students in other programs, e.g. Arts and Architecture in North.
