My son is deciding between Syracuse and Penn State UP for mechanical engineering. He does not mind the cold weather and is hoping to fit in some snowboarding. Any thoughts on the 2 schools for engineering. We live in the midwest.

Penn State is known for it’s great engineering program, but I haven’t heard much about Syracuse. I would just see which school he feels most comfortable at; have you visited them both?

I would recommend PSU for mechanical engineering over Syracuse. I am currently a Junior in the program and I have to say that I am impressed with it. All of the professors in the department are very good and they like to know your names even if the class has 100+ students.

Snowboarding is very possible here too. We have snowboarding classes held on 5 days of the week in the early part of the spring semester. Classes are held at Tussey Mountain with Cata Buses that take you directly there and back. I, myself, have taken 2 ski classes my first two years which fulfills 2/3 of the required GHA credits.

If you have any specific questions, I’m sure others on here already in the ME department can help along with myself.
