I am currently struggling to choose between PSU university park and Lehigh for college. I am considering going to veterinary or medical school, but I do not plan on being a "premed" major like the one offered at PSU. I have heard many med schools prefer students with a different major.

So what I wanted to know was does anyone have any experience or opinions on the two?
I do get in state tuition at PSU so that is a plus, but I am more concerned with your opinions of the programs not the money.
Do you think Lehighs name is worth the extra thirty thousand or so a year? I am currently registered as a biology major but I would consider switching to behavioral neuroscience.
Thank you! I'm lost/ worried and your help is appreciated. :))

I really need help!

“Do you think Lehighs name is worth the extra thirty thousand or so a year?” - NO!!! If the only reason you choose to go to Lehigh is because you think it will increase your chances at med school acceptance, that’s a waste of $120,000. That money would pay for a good chunk of med school tuition. If you choose to go to Lehigh because you think that school is a better fit and has more of what you are looking for, that’s another matter.

Med schools don’t care what major you have, as long as you complete the prerequisites for admission. In most cases, these are pretty straightforward. I’ve known music majors that were admitted to med school. Personally, I think a “pre-med” major is a complete waste of four years of schooling and you certainly don’t have to have that major to get into med school out of PSU. The majority of kids starting out with the intention of becoming doctors will change their minds along the way. And a large number will not get into medical school even after completing four years of undergrad. At that point, what is the value of a “pre-med” major?

Last year, 2010, 202 kids that graduated from PSU got accepted to medical schools. Here’s the breakdown of what schools they got into.:

Such a helpful post Quiettype! Thank you! I’m planning on majoring in Neuroscience, so if I change my mind I can do something else!

Thanks for the link too!

I would agree. The academic difference between Lehigh and Penn State is not large enough to warrant paying $30,000/year extra for Lehigh. However, Lehigh is a lot smaller than Penn State and has a different environment. If you like the feel of Lehigh a lot more, it might be worth it.
