I want to call people's attention to a story in today's Philadelphia Inquirer:
Penn neighborhood blooms around a top school | Philadelphia Inquirer | 04/05/2010

At first glimpse, this doesn't have much to do with any Penn undergraduate, or anyone thinking of becoming a Penn undergraduate. But 90%+ of Penn undergraduates wind up living off campus for 1-3 years, and of that group well more than half wind up living in the neighborhood described in the article.

There's a lot of misinformation out there about the neighborhood around Penn. This article explains why what somebody "knows" based on having been at Penn 8 or 9 years ago (or more) is seriously out of date. Penn's neighborhood is NOT, heaven knows, Princeton NJ or Palo Alto CA. But it's a looooong way from awful or depressed.
