People applying to Bates for 2005/06

at my interview, they told me that fin aid for international students at any american university is limited, competitive to get, etc. but bates seem to be more generous than most. i guess if its a huge deal, look into princeton as well? they seem to be very generous, hehe. alas, i cant speak from experience, hope i helped

thanks, rissa & ibleedorangeandblue

I know a senior from my school who got into Bates and had a really good fin. package. So, i hope i can get in AND get a good aid coz i need it.

P.S: ibleedorangeandblue, yea i know Princeton has a lot of aid for int. students so i have it as my safety. ;)

your humor is noted my dear :]
but i really dont think princeton is THAT selective, sounds crazy i know but they take kids of 90 GPAs from my school-and no theyre not legacies, athelets, etc.
owell, just my 2cent on princeton. but hey, what the heck do i know? lol
and ofcourse, all the best w/ bates!

thats just the reason why i have it as my safety.

by the way, where are you applying to ???

No idea about international financial aid, but there are a fair amount of international kids here so it can't be awful. In general, Bates finacial aid is really good, so we tend to have more economic diversity than many of the other NESCAC schools. I know that my roommate is here on a $40,000 finacial aid package and a lot of other people who have pretty sizable amounts of aid. Of course, there are also a lot of rich boarding school kids here as well so it all balances out.

$40k! thats nuts. i hope the aid is good, i highly doubt my international status will change within the next months, lols. oy, this whole process makes me shiver. anyway, does any current student want to share a bit about his/her typical day at bates? thanks!

A guy in my room received $25,400 in straight grant money from Colby, heh, jsut don't want there to be an aire of "Bates is the only generous school;" although, 40k is a ton! And Bates IS amazing at giving out good money

All thats left to say is " I hope I get in AND get the 40K" $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

So anyone started with the "Why Bates" essay?????

...because I didn't get into Colby...hehe, just kidding (in the most just kidding way possible), but I couldn't help it :-).

I have finished my "Why Bates" essay now all I have to do is conquer my admissions essay. I have no clue on what I am going to write about because I want to be sure to pick the right topic.

that's a good point; the admissions essay is VERY key

Hey..just jumping in here.

I'm thinking of applying to Bates RD, but a little iffy about my chances. (GPA isn't that great and though I know it's SAT-optional, at least the M+CR section of the SAT I is okay, if not the Writing part. :()

I'm an intel, so I can't visit Bates or any other campuses which freaks me out, because...well...fit is a huge thing.

Haven't done my "Why Bates" essay yet....it's a little selfish, but the reason why I even heard of Bates was because of its policy of great finaid to international students. :( I'm a moocher, I admit! wails

But I think, from its website, that Bates seems like a really interesting and friendly campus. Seems diverse, too, though I'm a-wondering a bit about its dining services.

Heya,

I'm considering Bates as well--and yes, because they're generous with finaid for internationals... Heh, what a reason! I wonder if they will accept that in the supp. essay. ;)

laughing That would be interesting to find out, but I'd rather not risk it. :D

hmm... i didn't know bates is particularly famous for its international financial aid. that's great news since fin aid is a BIG issue for me...

i probably will do RD if vassar ED doesn't work out for me (hoping very badly that vassar ED DOES work out for me). i'll find out more about the school from its site today :)

and also start working on my application...

the one thing that discouraged me in the beginning though was that a guy from bowdoin kept saying that bates isn't that great. at that time i wondered if it was because they're both in maine and the schools share some rivalry. but since you guys seem to like it so much, it must be good. :D

one thing bates (colby as well i think) beats bowdoin hands down is the international finaid... bowdoin is super stingy with financial aid! they award on average only 4 full financial aid packages a year, and usually 2 to ED applicants... but i am impressed with the fact that they r open with it (they wrote it in the brochures i think) even though that might very well deter prospective applicants (haha like me).

im applying to Bates! =) tennis recruited as well (i think)

I will be applying to Bates if my Penn ED doesn't work out for me... which doesn't look so good. :/ I love the school though, and I love Maine. I'm probably applying to Bowdoin too.

O.K. Werd's response- because I didn't get into Colby was great. You could also start it Well I'm certainly not applying because of your high acceptance rate...
