And I can't shake that. I've always cared a lot about what other people think. When I've told some of my high school friends, coworkers, etc. about where I plan on going, they say something like "Ew. Doesn't (insert name of guy from my grade who's not terribly bright) go there?" It's known as the 4 year school in my state that anyone can get into. I want to go there because they are really known for being big on computers and I want a degree in either computer science or graphic design. It's also bigger than my current school and has a lot of clubs that I'd really want to join. Not that my current school is that prestigious (the acceptance rate is only 3% lower than the school I want to transfer to), but even my parents would rather me transfer up instead of down. I did have a 3.8 gpa in high school and got a 30 on the ACT, so should I be aiming higher?

“All that may be true, but it is also true that it has the best program for my major in the entire state. I would be a fool to turn down an opportunity to study X in such a great department”

Dear Sir/Madam, it sounds like you would be happier at this school, and would face better job prospects upon graduating. If these acquaintances care enough about where you are planning to go to school to comment, I’m sure they won’t mind if you explain that that school has a better program for what you are interested in. A friend of mine transferred from Harvard to a local state school because they are much better at nursing. It was the right choice for him, and if people were ignorant enough as to judge him, than he really didn’t care.
