So I got an invitation to the People to People Leadership Summit this year. I really want to go to the Johns Hopkins medical program, but at $2800, it's a little steep. My parents don't NOT want me to go, but it would be a great catalyst in their decision if this helped in college admissions. So my question is, do summer programs, specifically People to People, help in college admissions? I live in Canada, and there aren't many programs like this here. I just got an invitation this year because I took the SAT in December, and I've been receiving mail from universities, summer programs, etc.

Any help would be really nice :)

I went to the People to People Leadership Summit at Georgetown during my 9th grade year. I was always told that it looked good on college applications, but I could be wrong. However, it was a great experience.

No, they do not help in college admissions. All they do is tell colleges that you have a decent amount of disposable income. The colleges that do get impressed by ECs, etc. would be far more impressed by an EC or ordinary job that you created in your hometown. Such colleges also are impressed by very competitive free summer programs such as RSI and TASP.

The leadership summit also isn’t an honor. They just market it like one in order to lure people to pay big bucks to participate.

Well… I would not say it is a lure to get you to pay money. But as Northstarmom said, such programs only prove you can pay a lot of money. They do teach a lot, though. That being said, I would much rather not pay money for this “leadership summit”. It is not selective AT ALL.

Okay guys, thanks for your help. I just had another question; I’ve been doing web design as a business for the past couple of years. I’ve had about 10 clients, and can get good recommendation letters from them. Would my running a business look good on an application?

running a business would look good on college applications

attending a People to People program does not particularly add to your college applications but I suppose if you had a great experience on a P to P trip it might be good to write about in a college essay
