My daughter has just received an invitation to attend the 2008 People to People Student Leader Programs Leadership Summit. Anyone know anything about this program? Attended it previously? I'm curious as to how many students are selected for this, and whether or not it is a good program. I have already read the main web page. Just seeking additional info.

Also, I found it interesting that the brochure sent specified the colleges as George Washinton Uni, American Uni, Harvard, U of Chicago, Stanford, John Hopkins, and U of Cali, while the website stated all these and NYU and Columbia. Same program?

No offense, but I would have your daughter look at other programs if she is interested. Many students are selected for the program. It is similar to Who's Who or National Society of High School Scholars. Both my sister and I were invited to join. My mother even went to the meeting, because my sister is in. My mother was interested in learning more about it, too. She talked to her friends. One of them said while she was on vacation in Eurpe, she saw the People to People group there. She said the the kids acted like a bunch of brats. That was enough for my mom. Yes, it is interesting, but I don't believe that is worth the price. I believe it is a "gimmeck" program. If your daughter is interested in leadership, I would possibly recommend a JSA summer program or starting Student Dipolomats. Depending on his/her age, a summer internship, volunteering, or job would be more benefical.

In terms of college applications, it is not prestigous. Don't get me wrong, I am one that believes you do things that are fun. And the program is probably fun.

Overall, I would recommend looking at other programs. There are so many programs out there with a better reputaton and offers more to the student. The program invites so many people, so it can have money.

If you have any other questions or want ideas, please let me know.

Also, there are many forums on here that have more information and feedback. I remembered that on one it said that PTP had invited a boy that had been dead for 5 years.

From the website of the Iowa Attorney General:

"'People to People Student Ambassador' Program Agrees to Modify Representations About How Students are 'Selected' for International Travel -- Iowa mother whose child died at age 7 weeks in 1993 received letter saying her son had been 'recommended for the honor' of a 20-day trip to Europe (with a price tag of about $5,000.)"

i attended people to people future leaders summit on international diplomacy last summer (2006).
it was a very fun experience to attend and i met incredible people. the program was very scheduled and we did pretty much everything (from museum visits to lectures to dining) with our groups of about 8 people (which were lead by an adult. mine was a graduate student in college that majored in international relations i believe). for me it was really my first time away from home by myself with no one i knew, and i thought it was good and felt comfortable. so see how your child feels about this. any other questions, let me know!

I attended 3 people to people student ambassador programs and have visited 12 foreign countries with the program. it is an absolutely legitimate program and the most memorable and life changing experiences happen when you become a student ambassador. i would recommend the program to anyone. however; a lot can depend on the area that you are from, as that is where the group leaders are recruited from and the other students are from. my area is well known for excellent leaders and mature well behaved ambassadors. i would encourage you to look into the programs if your child is interested but be prepared that the price is high but is actually a bargain for all of the travel, tours, lectures and experience it comes with.

the program is legitimate, but it has no prestige at all.
Mainly because the program is not on the basis of test scores or acdemic success.
I recommend you looking into other programs that doesn't require 8000 for the sumemr.
