People who take their language learning seriously.

I'm taking Japanese in school and want to major in it. However, even though I live in NYC, I can never, everrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr find a Japanese person to talk to.

Until today :o

Today at the library I asked an asian lady if they had Memoirs of a Geisha. She immediately told me she hadn't seen that book in a long time. Why would someone know that off the top of their head? I became suspicious. 15 minutes later I got the courage to ask if she was Japanese. She was. And she spoke it. We gagged in Japanese for 10 minutes. I told her I'd be going to the library more often to have conversations. I'm going on Friday now.

I was so excited :D

Just as long as she doesn’t mind.

I love German but the only ones that I know that speak it are Mennonites who mostly keep to themselves. You are one lucky person.

She was like, “Yes of course!” She was surprised that I spoke it.

That’s awesome lol but just make sure she doesn’t get annoyed. You can also have a conversation by yourself. Record your self on the computer!

-Computer “Hey how are you?”
-You “Excellent.”
Continue the conversation with
yourself lol.

^ha that would take a unique person

^or a lonely one x)

Did you find Japanese hard? I’ve been planning to take it because I have NO love for Spanish…

It’s really phonetic so there’s absolutely nothing difficult about speaking, though Japanese people speak extremely fast.

It’s the writing and vocabulary that are painful. I only know like 50 kanji and if I want to read ANYTHING in Japanese I need ~2,000.

I always liked watching movies dubbed/subtitled in the language I was learning, or listening to music in the language. Really helps!

I’ve been doing that recently, but I know anime will not help and I’m picky about the live action movies I watch. I’m only interested in like samurai war epics but the Japanese in those isn’t very useful today :P

Hey I know this half-Japanese girl at my school. Could you tell me a few pick-up phrases in Japanese that I could use? I’m pretty sure she understands Japanese … or hopefully at least basic Japanese :D. If she didn’t that would be a shame :(.

Oh my gosh haha… I’m Japanese and I get a lot of "Konichiwa"s and "Nihao"s ALL the time from guys who think they’re so clever.

If you actually understand and speak the language, that’s fine. Otherwise, please don’t embarrass yourself…

And I don’t mean this in a condescending way, just that it’s quite…amusing :D

Yeah I know that’s pretty annoying, especially when people start mangling Chinese with Japanese :p.

I knew"konichiwa," but I’m wasn’t about to drop that in front of the girl I was talking about …
