Okay, I was just wondering, as were my friends and I. How would you describe people at Colgate? I mean, are they nice, mean, funny, weird? What? Give me your best description. Please of course.

Of course every answer will be a generalization on this subjective topic, but I would say Mainstream, sporty, ambitious but not cutthroat, sense of humor (like SNL), not weird or quirky.

When I visited, everyone was so friendly and welcoming! Everyone is very sporty, and loves to work and play hard. I know it’s pretty general, but that was the feel I got from the overall student body.

This video has a lot to say about the people here: [What makes Colgate University unique? - YouTube](<a href=“What makes Colgate University unique? - YouTube”>What makes Colgate University unique? - YouTube)

As an alumnus and a father of a Colgate student (daughter), I’d say Colgate students are regular people, but perhaps brighter, more athletic, and harder working than most but that might apply to students at any of the top 25 colleges.

Among college students, I’ve always thought of Colgate students as bright, smart kids who love sports who sit in the front row of the class and want to talk about the subject. Many Colgate students have a kind of enthusiasm (and lack of cynicism) and sense of humor that makes them generally appealing and just a bit more pleasant than many other college kids I know. They work hard, many very hard (at least I and all my pre-med and pre-law roommates did!). Most Colgate grads go into the media, law, medicine, business, sometimes teaching and others. They speak well and tend to look healthy and appealing and are positive and friendly people – not “lurkers” or introverts or anti-socials, though I knew some of them at Colgate in my day.

But they are not the brainy intellectuals or intensely athletic (but doesn’t study much) students you’d get at some other schools (no offense to them). Colgate students tend to be pretty WASPy and suburban., though that is changing with many more types of students than ever before. I think far too much is made of this – the J.Crew model comments – but I’ve heard a number of people describe Colgate students this way as looking mainstream and WASPy (including my wife!), so maybe there’s some truth to that, too.

There are also a lot of frat boys, but most are basically pretty smart kids who also study hard, and some druggies (not as many as some other schools where the smell of drugs wafts across campus at times) and some serious athletes and others. Colgate could use more artsy types, painters and poets and musicians, in my opinion, but there are some of them, too. And Colgate has far too many drinkers which I never much liked when I was a student. But every college has too much alcohol, so you just don’t go to parties when you aren’t in the mood. I was rarely bothered by it. I don’t drink much.

It’s kind of ridiculous to generalize but as an academic for 40 years, myself, I know that each school does have a “type” which many students fit into. Like attracts like, I guess. So, hard-working, smart, good-humored, energetic, and perhaps too much of a drinker. With a great future. That’s a Colgate student to me.

When I visited Colgate everyone seemed very happy and excited about life! The campus was full of very attractive students (this was slightly intimidating). Compared to other campuses i’ve visited Colgate students seemed the most outgoing yet preppy.
