How do you define the percentage chances for the terms: "match", "reach", "slight reach", "safety"?

Because in my chances thread I have been given a few answers in percentages and was wondering what they translate to.

Thanks

OOpps sorry for posting to of these

IMO

Safety = 99% sure that you will get accepted. They say nowadays there are no true safeties, I don't buy that personally, but left the 1% in just in case.

Match = 40-60% chance of acceptance

Slight Reach = 25-39% chance of acceptance

Reach = less than 25% chance of acceptance

formost ppl match is generally 50-60 percent, about a coin flip

I don't think match is a coin flip... I think match is like, 60%... You'll probably get in, but it's not an overwhelming yes.

Everybody has a different standard for this, but... My standards go:
In = 99+%
Safety = 85~98%
Safe Match = 70~84%
Match = 50~69%
High Match = 35~49%
Slight Reach = 20~35%
Reach = 5~19%
Far Reach = 0~4%

Of course, as I said, everybody has different standards, and plus, it's really impossible to know what your chances really are, so these are just general guidelines for me. I usually go with "the feel"

Keep in mind people on here only see what you post. There are other factors that an admissions officer takes into account that a poster on CC doesn't.

For example say a student with a 3.3 W, a couple APs and honors, is applying to a state school with a better GPA range. If the college the student is applying to has a good track record with the student's high school a 3.3 means more to them, then having a 3.8W at a school with 50 kids in the class and inflated grades. The student with a 3.3 would be more likely to be accepted. Whereas on CC most posters would say the guy with the 3.8 has a better chance.

This is a common occurence at my school, were kids below a school's stated range as far as GPA and SAT are accepted.

So just keep in mind the chances you get from CC posters are not always what you're actually gonna get.
