Perfect attendance throughout HS -- does this help me in any way?

I'm sure being late and absent a lot can hurt an applicant, but what about being present? Never been absent for three full school years. But I think it is just expected of us to attend school every day. What do you think

don't you get sick lol. I had perfect attendance from grade 3 to grade like 7. Then i got sick one day. Highschool attendance is good for me too. To answer your question, it won't hurt you.. but it may be a stretch to say it will really help. At best, it may show your commitment to education which i guess can create a good impression. in other words, if i had to put it in numbers... GPA and SAT being worth 50, essays 10 then this would be worth 1.

Less than 1, I doubt high schools even include something like this in the material they send to colleges. If that is the case then the only way they would know is if you mention it on your application and then its just another "thing"... people say, and make up, a lot of "things".

I seriously doubt it will help in any way...

Dude. My friend is a senior and has NEVER missed a day of school since (and by 'since' I mean 'including') KINDERGARTEN. It's absurd.

Anyways, my school's transcripts have days present and days absent for each year. Maybe yours do, too? If not, I doubt it's worth mentioning.

how would colleges know about your perfect attendance

Most colleges wouldn't care.

And if you specifically mention it on your application, it might just look like you're desperate to come up with something, anything, to distinguish yourself!

Would colleges rather have someone who gets 100s on all their tests but doesn't come to school often or someone who stays in school but doesn't do as well?

It angers me that perfect attendance awards are given out at our high school. Students come to school when they are sick and it spreads germs. I'm sorry, but no one goes through an entire year without being sick!

For a good--and clever--writer, perfect attendance might be parlayed into an amusing college essay, although there would have to be more substance to it than simply, "I never missed school." For instance, the applicant could write about all of the things that he or she unsuccessfully attempted to excel at, from ballet to basketball, saxophone to spelling bees, until finally discovering that the only way to be "perfect" at something was simply by showing up. :)

On another note, there was a boy at my son's elementary school a few years ago who was about to graduate (from 5th grade) and had had perfect attendance since kindergarten. But, on the way to school on the last day, when he was to receive a special attendance award, he threw up in the car, and his mother took him home.
