Perfect score in english... = 35?

I scored 18/18 in both subscores on the act during the last test, but my score for english was a 35. What gives?

Is this how it's suppose to works?

Yes. Check out the scales in the REAL ACT book.

The subscores do not have a direct conversion to the section score as they are based on different curves. You may have missed 1 question and yet your still get 18 in a subscore (just like missing a question in Math may still get 36 sometimes). While in the whole section, missing 1 question may get you down to 35. English is the toughest section to get full score that you cannot miss a single question. Section score is not a simple summation of subscores. You would understand it easier with the Math score as it has 3 subscores and each subscore is based on different number of questions but all has a maximum of 18.
