A month or so ago, I submitted my common app for early application to Caltech.
Today, I revisited common app to work on my regular app supplements...
My heart fell apart as soon as I clicked on my Common App personal essay.

THE ESSAY WAS MY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION DOCUMENT.

I have no idea why this happened. I clicked on "view document" before submitting it, and my essay was there.

What just happened? Should I send an email to Caltech with the personal essay? Will this kill my chance of acceptance?

What should I do with the common app, which doesn't let any revisions after submitting an app to any college?

Update: I have sent an email to Caltech admissions asking whether they have received my personal essay or not. Then, I attached the .doc file of the personal essay (it’s “last modified” time is thankfully 10/31/2010).

As for regular application, I have found out that it is possible to have multiple Common App application copies under one account and followed the instructions for doing so. Thus, that problem has been solved.

I am, however, still very worried about my admission chance to Caltech - which is probably in shambles as if it took a direct hit from a 100-ton truck. How would this be viewed? A technical issue or my fault?

If you had inadvertantly left the essay portion blank you would have gotten an error message when you originally submitted your application. You also said you have a “last modified” date of 10/31. That substantiates that you more than likely did everything correctly from your end. This snafu isn’t going to hurt your chances, imo.
