I rewrote my personal statement for MSU to make it more based on an experience & characteristic and make it more true (? sorry i’m tired, hope that made sense)
“Michigan State University recognizes that an assortment of interests, viewpoints, and life experiences are important in student learning and enhance the university community. Describe an experience, passion, or characteristic that illustrates what you would contribute to the MSU community and how this will add to the overall richness of campus life.”
As a child, I was extremely antisocial and often kept to myself. I lacked friends and close siblings. Instead of socializing, I would sit at home and create; whether it was through words, a paintbrush, or even music. Creating things gave me a sense of freedom and expression. All of my thoughts, feelings, and emotions could be formed into one piece of art.
Last year, my teacher approached me, asking me if I wanted to try creating a design for my school’s paraphernalia. Seeing it as in opportunity to test my creativity, I accepted the offer. Being new to Photoshop, I spent many days researching how to use a variety of tools and functions. It took a few days to create, considering that I wanted my design to be as “minimalistic, yet unique” as possible. I submitted my design and, out of the whole class, my piece was selected.
Due to this experience, I gained confidence in my skills, and began to create more. I began to explore different mediums, which led finding the art of filmmaking. I found the desire to touch people’s hearts; make them smile, laugh and even cry.
I believe that my creativity can add to the diversity of the MSU community. I see an endless amount of possibilities and opportunities everywhere that is yet to be discovered and unveiled. Expressing creativity not only helped me grow as a person, but it helped me form bonds with my family and friendships with those who shared the same interests. As an MSU student, I plan to join the MSU Filmmakers Club, participating in the competitive film contests they host annually, and sharing my ideas in attempt to inspire those around me. I want them to see how much something intangible can touch your heart.
