For the personal statement section of the app, how restrictive are the topics given? If I wrote a "why Tulane is perfect for me" short essay, would that be an acceptable personal statement?

budda - Tulane seems to prefer wide open questions. The “blank box” Deans’ Honors Scholarship application would be a good example of that. So sure, you get to pick the topic.

As for using “why Tulane is perfect for me” I think it would depend on how you presented your answer. “I like the idea of suntanning in January and drinking every night” clearly won’t do. But something more cerebral might be exactly right. (BTW, if you have to ask for ideas of why Tulane is perfect for you, then definitely choose another topic.)

New Hope is right, it is wide open and creativity is valued. But by all means be yourself, because in the end more people screw up trying to be too clever or saying what they think admissions wants to hear. I would only say that you might want to slightly change it to “why I THINK Tulane is perfect for me”. After all, you only know what you have read or experienced in a visit. While both these things are valuable, they obviously cannot substitute for being immersed in the day-to-day life of a student and the understanding that brings. Universities are complex, living social organisms, all the more so because there are a lot of really smart people as their components. Also, it is a two-way street. Why are you perfect for Tulane? In the end, the undergraduate experience at a school is largely defined by its students.

I also had some questions about Tulane’s personal statement. Since they don’t have the common app, can I use my regular college essay as an answer to the personal statement?
I suppose it would go under the category of a “significant life experience.”

Hi All,

As yo’all know by now that Tulane is a top/prestige research university. Tulane has done a lot of research and my Son wrote it in his essay about his passion of research in BME. It was not long essay but brief and to do the point/concise and therefore was accepted. So, perhaps you can write something about your passion for research whether in business or economics, engineering or politics, etc. Good luck and may the Force be with you.
