I’ve been reading some people’s posts mentioning they received acceptance letters mentioning something specifically about that applicant. How common is this?

Williams' acceptance letter did include some references to my application... it was a nice touch:)

I would assume that this is a lot more common at small college... since it would be a mammoth task trying to personalise 15000 acceptance letters...

My acceptance letter from from Scripps was personalized, but out of about 17 acceptances, that was the only one.

Colgate included handwritten personal messages on their acceptance letters. In comparing them here on CC it seemed that a number of the notes were fairly similar in that the writers probably picked out one from a few standard themes (i.e.- I really enjoyed reading your essay) and may have slightly customized it. But heck, most people do that when they have to write just a few dozen thank yous for weddings, showers, bar mitzvahs etc. Out of 15 schools Colgate was the only school to do this and it really stood out.

I request for information form Colgate..and there's a personalized note from the dean wishing me well in school and a thank you note for interest in Colgate.. and they actually send me 3 mails at one go!! Impressive!

Deans are paid to do this. Smaller colleges tend to do this more. If they really want you they will send you a personal letter. its effective isnt it? Makes you feel good about yourself that you sub consiecncly push the college up as one of your higher choices. Its called marketing and some colleges are just really damn good at it. But you should feel good, it means they want you enough to pay a Dean to write you a special sentence. Congrats and Good Luck

Bowdoin for better applicants in regular decision rounds...
