"Perspective" essay?

Hey all,

I'm in the middle of writing my Rice supplement, and I'm really kind of amazed at the length that the instructions call for in the "cultural perspectives" essay - 2 to 3 double spaced pages?! That would be over 1000 words, I think.... How long are yours? Are you really writing this much? Accepted students and prospectives like me, I'd love any piece of insight...

I personally had a lot of trouble keeping it under the limit. There is definitely a correct way to write this essay, but it varies highly from person to person. You have to melt your personality and strengths into the content of this essay; how you do that is completely up to you.

I have a lot of ideas for the essay, the hard part is intergrating them into a unified product…

Choose one and embellish  Don’t look like a scatterbrain.

College app essays are not easy :-(

Yeah, I’d definitely recommend sticking to one topic and expanding on it well. I personally started with an anecdote and then went on to explain its significance. That got me to 2 3/4 pages, if I remember correctly.

Best of luck!

Mine was ~2 pages. I’m not sure I agree there’s a “correct” way to write this essay; I’ve chatted with other students about it and people interpreted it in many, many different ways… I would say interpret it in a way that allows you to write with passion. Good luck!

I have no idea where to start with this one…

Let me phrase the question differently: why are you going to be the person I’m going to want to get to know next year? What aspects of your character, personality, and experiences am I going to be able to attribute to you (and ideally only you).
