So, I've been reviewing my essay one last time, and it is bothering me because when I wrote the essay, I never really knew how I should approach it. I ended up writing about an experience that shaped my perspective and how that perspective would contribute in the Rice University setting. Was that a good way to write the essay? Because looking at some essays written by other students, their essays are vastly different than the way I wrote mine.

i believe any approach works. I was wondering how long yours is…because mine is on the short side

Ah ok thanks for the reply. My essay is roughly 950 words, it’s around 2 and a half pages

sigh. i like fizzled out at 600 exactly.

The length does not matter. Make sure it is cohesive and covers all your points without being shortened because of perceived length or made verbose to fill pages.

That sounds like a good approach to the essay. Using that approach seems to me to be answering the question and telling them something about yourself, which is what they’re looking for. This is a topic that can - and should - generate vastly different essays; after all, the students applying have vastly different perspectives.

A 1.5-page solid, to-the-point essay is better than a fluffy 2-page essay.

When they’re looking at your essay, they’re considering both what it says about you and your writing skills. Economy of words is important.
