Petroleum Engg

I just found out that UTPB University of Texas Permian Basin is offering Bachelor's Degree in Petroleum engineering and the tuition fee is not that expensive in comparing to University of Houston. My question is...

1- Will it matter if i graduate from one of these schools (UTPB or U of HOU) and what are my chances for getting a job
2- Secondly I heard that if you have graduated from any UT system (universities like Dallas , Arlington and etc) with GPA 3.2 and above is guaranteed an admission to UT Austin?

If you are not admitted to UT Austin (applied and not admitted for undergrad) they can offer you a program called CAP. (Coordinated Admission Program)…where you go to another UT school (UTPB, UTA, UT Pan Am, etc your freshman year) and if you take the required core classes, and maintain a 3.2, you are automatically admitted to UT Austin your sophomore year to Liberal Arts or Undeclared. Getting into Cockrell School of Engineering at UT Austin, and petroleum in particular, is very difficult. We are looking at this situation. I have heard you need a very high GPA (higher than 3.6 in the core engineering classes…physics, chemistry, calculus, etc) to even be looked at by Engineering at UT Austin. There just aren’t many spots and the competition is fierce. You may want to consider staying at UTPB and getting your degree there, and trying for summer internships with local oil companies to get your foot in the door. If you are a good worker, you know people that can give you references, that will help. It’s all about knowing folks. Midland Odessa is actually very nice. Not a lot of water or trees, but the people are friendly.
