I am going into my senior year and my dream is to become a petroleum engineer. Luckily I live in Indiana which is home to two top engineering schools; Rose-Hulman and Purdue. I have visited Rose-Hulman and would love to go there. My problem is neither of these schools offer petroleum engineering as a major. I want to come out of college and be able to work at an oil rig. My question is, which major at these schools would be the closest to petroleum engineer.

Probably Chemical Engineering

I’d say Mechanical Engineering. But even more important than your degree, is finding out what oil companies recruit your school.

Your major really doesn’t matter. I work for a major oil company, and they hire mechanical engineers as drilling and reservoir engineers all the time. Your starting pay will be less, but after that the promotion track is the same. As long as you are chemical, mechanical, or petroleum you will find a job in the industry. And they don’t have to recruit at your school, though it does make it easier.

Also, I am a Kentucky resident and attend Louisiana State University for in-state tuition. Their is a program called the Academic Common Market that makes this possible. Basically, if the state you live in does not offer the major you want, you can attend a specific school at in-state prices. Google it.

This update from my college was interesting. I don’t recall much oil/gas work in my day

GE grant provides funds to Clarkson University for an academic program in oil & gas engineering

“Clarkson faculty have demonstrated they have the skills in the classroom and in the laboratory to equip students for some of the most challenging work in the energy sector,” observed GE Oil & Gas President and 1979 alumnus Daniel Heintzelman. “GE’s and Clarkson’s partnership is deep and wide, and is important in developing an exciting career in a growing global industry where technology continues to play an ever-increasing role. Together, we have shown a commitment to hands-on problem-solving with successful outcomes.”
