Hey! I know that, on some campuses, small pets such as fish — and maybe hamsters, etc. — are allowed. I don’t have any plans for this myself, but I thought it would be fun to see if any of y’all have taken advantage of certain campus’ pet allowance, and how that went for you.
University of New Mexico has pet-friendly dorms that allow dogs (under 45 lbs) and cats and other small animals in specially designated dorms.

@WayOutWestMom — Hm! I was unaware that any colleges had such an allowance. I wonder how many students take advantage of that, getting some little pup for their dorms. I wonder what effect it has on the student body at-large.
This is the program’s first year so it’s a work-in-progress. So far no serious pet-related on-campus incidents have been reported.
My D had a fish for a while. The trick is, on breaks, everyone else is on break too! Unless you are within driving distance and can take it back and forth. Something to consider.
@TS0104 — Certainly, it would be something that could only work for those who can drive.
Hamsters, gerbils etc are nocturnal and will spin their wheel and scratch all night. Dogs, puppy’s would just be cruel in such a small room. But maybe a fish. They are pretty quiet… Lol…
@Knowsstuff Yeah, lol; I was thinking maybe a hermit crab or a snail XD
When you actually get a roommate (you will be fine), you will have the chance to let them know what you intend to bring. This is just courtesy incase your roommate has a fear of such pets, allergies etc. ?
Some schools let you do this, yes. And many give accommodations for small therapy animals if you suffer from anxiety. I think most take this into consideration when assigning roommates if you register with the office of disability services.
@Knowsstuff — Yeah, if I were to get a little pet, I would do it after conversing with the roommate about it. If it ever comes up, it’d be nice to do it together or something, so that we may both enjoy it. It would have to be something low-maintenance of course.
@PetraMC — I’m sure that’s a valuable service for those suffering from conditions of that sort.
