Anybody in PH142 with Selvin, does he use the typical 90/80/70 cutoffs for A-, B- etc? I'm concerned because with the midterm if you made 2 careless mistakes you are already at an A- using the standard cutoffs and no partial credit/5 points off per error. Yet if you look at his grade distributions on pickaprof 75% of the class receives an A- or better?

Also, for the final, I heard that about half of it is over chapter 8. Anybody confirm or deny this?

According to friend who took the class 2 years ago: Supposed to be about half regression, a little bit about normal distribution (sketching distribution with different sample sizes and how that affects standard deviation and variance), Z scores, and a decent amount of T test and Chi squared. Wherever there are tables to be constructed (with regression or chi squared for example) having you fill them in tended to be part of the questions.

I hadn’t heard that, I heard he would drop your midterm if you did better on the final, but I would love it if what you just said were true, as I was ok with my midterm score but am a little nervous about the final. Do you know anything about how 75% of the class ends up with A’s and the rest B’s with the exception of 1%ish C’s according to courserank and pickaprof?

I think he said that in lecture one time, but I am not sure if it’s true. I am nervous for the final too. The book can be a little confusing, the way he explains the problems. It’s a little inconsistent… but that’s just my take on it.

My gsi said that he purposely makes the course load light because he knows graduate students need to pass this class (or something like that). And since the class isn’t curved, I wouldn’t be too surprised. Judging by the MT score distribution, a lot of students did really well.

what was the distribution on the midterm? I didn’t see it. Yeah I feel the same way about the book, esp chapters 7-8. So 75% of the class gets a 90% or better? (Is 90% A-?) That should be reassuring but instead I’m just going to feel stupid if I don’t get an A now…I heard the final was somewhat more difficult than the midterm.

There was a paper posted on the glass window next to the cart where you picked up your MT. Most people were around the 90%. I think 90% is an A- since it’s not curved. I’m scared about the final now haha. That would suck if he throws a curveball, which is why I’m hoping the 60% MT is true lol.

Ah. I’m clearly observant…Yeah I really hope the 60% midterm bit is true also. But I also heard rumor of somebody “failing” the exams and escaping with a B-? Maybe a grad student needing to pass? Or maybe it’s just rumor. I think I spent most of the semester being too chill about this class because “everybody gets an A” but I guess it’s because everybody does well. I’m just worried because the 2 I missed on the midterm were really silly mistakes, and if I make even one more of those on the final there goes an A it sounds like. Oh well, we’ll see what happens. Good luck!

I didn’t see it either, a friend told me haha. I think almost everyone just chilled through the class. Most people didn’t go to lecture (including me lol). I was surprised they were so strict on the partial credit. Good luck to you too!

is correlation gonna be on the test? thats the only chapter i couldnt will myself to work through…too many damn variations of the same darn equation

What were the cut-offs? I got an A- and after calculating the points I seem to have had 86% in the class. Not bad, but can’t say this class was a super easy A (though granted the only work I put in was doing hws and studying right before the exams).

^^ dunnO what cutoffs were either…mean was 88 or final though (lower than midterm so he has to have curved a little…)

I got an 86 too overall and A- too. I seriously thought id fall into solid B after the final too…not bad considering i went to one section all semester and 8 lectures in total lolol
