curved/average grades for 14B

My TA told me...

average for quiz1= 25/40
average for quiz2= 29/40
average for midterm= 67/110
average for organic worksheet (speculated)= 38/40

So, if the average grade is curved to be a B-, 80%, is this correct:

quiz1: 25/.8= 31.25 <-- ("actual" number of points that quiz 1 is out of)
quiz2: 29/.8= 36.25
...and so on....

I'm trying to figure out if I can get an A/A- in this class, but I don't know if what I did above is valid.

I got 32 for quiz1, 38 for quiz2 and 64 for the midterm (this is why I'm worried)... I'm pretty sure I got 40/40 on the worksheet and the final is out of 170 points. Thanks

Knowing the standard deviation to each of those grades would help give a more accurate approximation.

I thought the average for quiz 1 was 21. I'm in lecture 1. Which lecture are you guys in?

it doesnt usually work like that. usually all the points are added together and the entire class is then curved at the end, not each individual assignment.

dont worry about all this stuff. just study your ass off an aim for 100% on the final. calculating all this stuff is meaningless because you have absolutely no idea what the grade distribution is going to look like for the final. so just aim to ace it, so that you'll be on top no matter what the distribution is.

lol this is insane. i think that as long as you are 10% above the average, you are going to get an A/A-. btw, is this class curved or scaled? anyways, i agree with VTEC, we should just try to do our best on the final.

btw, nice job on the quizzes, Ookla!

average for spring 2006 around 70%.

Class average was 70% and the class GPA was 2.62 which is a B-.

http://voh.chem.ucla.edu/vohtar/spring06/classes/14B-1/announcements.html

so around 80-85% should be a safe A.

im in lecture 3 funnyman

Ookla...yea those numbers are right for lecture 3 although i think the average for quiz 2 could have been a little lower.

So going in to the final...the average is 69%..
I don't know how hard the final will be but I'm guessing it will be around 70%. So just shoot for 80-85% for an A like funnyman said. Thus, aim for 320/400 for an A. Ookla- so you need 86% or 146/170 on the final to get a safe A.

Somehow I lucked out an have 210 out of 230 points going in to the final (if I get 40 on the worksheet)
Quiz 1- 34/40
Quiz 2- 32/40
Midterm 104/110 (pulled this out of my ass)
Worksheet- 40/40 hopefully

actually...the midterm wasn't 67 out of 110....it was 67%

here's an idea.

instead of flipping out about the minimum, why doesn't everyone just study, do as well as they can on the final, and leave the graders to do their jobs?

your presence of mind will thank you for it later on.

^^ exactly.

this isnt high school where the grade you get is the grade you get, and you can calculate exactly however many points minimum you need to keep an A.

shoot for the minimum, and dont be surprised if you get screwed over.

dang... now i'm depressed.

yes...i agree, but i just wanted to help ookla out.
If you study everything, then you allow yourself the opportunity of getting 100%. That's how it should be if you want an A. Just keep going until you feel confident.

haha...

i have ABSOLUTELY no intention of going for the minimum, especially after what happened in the midterm

Those are very nice grades surferboy.. im jealous

anyways, I just wanted to know that it was still possible to get an A/A-

If there's no hope for you [with those scores], then the rest of us are doomed.

pray a lot and sacrifice some goats.

'works for me most of the time.

or study. sometimes that works too.
