Waiting on Northeastern University (I applied regular decision)
Honestly, the campus is BEAUTIFUL. It felt tranquil and quiet while visiting - campus feels like a suburban New England town. The new facilities (modern chem building, Hillside Residence Hall) are really tempting. Teachers and Deans seemed nice and the program seems like a good one. As for social life, I’ve heard mixed things. I talked to a grad of my high school that currently attends URI and she says there’s not much to do on campus, and if you want to have fun then having a car is a must. As for outside of campus, there’s always Newport and Narragansett Beach - and of course Providence. Personally speaking, I really want to have good job security after graduation and I really want a collective campus-type feel where I can meet new people and go to the occasional party. URI so far is my top choice along with Northeastern. Northeastern is appealing to me because of the co-op program which would help me get work experience as well as the location being in Boston - a college town with extensive opportunities post-graduation. However, Northeastern will charge a pretty coin and I’m not about to be 500 years in debt. Truly, I don’t know what school to pick. I’m visiting Northeastern later this month to get a feel of the campus. I’ll probably have to do some deep thinking considering I’m scared of commitment.
All the best and I wish your child luck in their applications!
As a parent - with one child that went to URI and another that went to Northeastern - I can tell you that they are very different environments. Both did well and have very different interests and were happy with their choice. If you have questions about either, just ask!
What made them decide on URI and Northeastern respectively? What do they like about each school and what do they dislike?
@AvatarCo1
The one that chose Northeastern had several reasons - 1) the Coop program 2) location in the city 3) she was able to get BS and MS in 5 years
The one that chose URI - 1) the major she wanted was limited to state schools (animal science) 2) location - does NOT like the city and loved the campus 3) Greek life.
There is a lot to do in Boston and it is all easily accessible via public transportation. At URI - you either need a car or have a friend with a car to be able to go off campus.
Both spent a decent amount of time on academics - because they were motivated students - but also found time to enjoy college.
The only negative we have regarding Northeastern was the housing. It is now guaranteed for all years but it wasn’t previously. The lottery process was stressful.
URI was a great experience. Many students move off campus - she chose to stay on for the convenience. She was very involved in Greek life, clubs, etc.
If you have any specific questions - let me know.
@AvatarCo1 what did you chose? im down to st johns and URI for pharmD
