I was accepted to URI pharm along with other pharm schools (Northeastern, Uconn, USP, Duquesne, Ferris State, etc)... I was wondering how good URI's pharmacy program is compared to the other schools I was accepted to. How hard is the program (workload)? Do many people stay in the program? How many people are in the program? I tried to find info on their website but didnt get any.

I also haven't visited the campus yet... any insight would be appreciated.

It should answer most of your questions about pharmacy.

I visited the campus, and I have PLENTY of acquaintances there. It's pretty nice--nicer than I thought it was going to be, considering that it's a state school (I should stop stereotyping state schools lol). The quad is pretty picturesque, and the campus is HUGE. It's about 20 minutes away from the beach, and it's in a rural area (so yea, people say you're practically in the woods lol).

IMO, the pharmacy program is really good. They're constantly improving the buildings (I believe they're building a new building or something like that), and there are lots of resources.

I wouldn't count your chickens before your eggs are hatched. Quite a few students that I know of received acceptance letters to programs they did not apply to and a couple were mistakenly accepted to the correct program (:( how depressing would that be?)

URI is in Rhode Island, as you hopefully know, and everywhere in Rhode Island is about two feet away from the beach. Also there's great towns to visit to go shopping or sight-seeing like Newport and Bristol. There's malls close by (Warwick, North Dartmouth, Seekonk) and the Providence Place Mall is awesome. Lots of cool cafes and family owned restaurants too.

Hey there, my friend got accepted to that program too, and I am typing this for her...

Basically, I live not far from the URI campus, so I don't want to go there mostly for the reason of proximity to my house.... but overall, the pharm program is a really good one, one of the best in the region. I don't know about statistics, but I am pretty sure they are better than UConn and Northeastern, at least).

200 are in the program when it starts, and then it gets cut down as people drop. Not sure how many are in the graduating program.

Fun fact about UConn: they only have so many spots in the pharm program after the pre pharmacy program, so if you don't have the GPA, you won't get in :(. URI's intensity weeds out people, so they accept everyone who has made it through the first years.

I’m applying to URI’s pharmacy program this year (among others)… I visited and attended the program orientation. It’s a lot harder than most would expect to get into the pharmacy program, the dean of admissions for the program said that last year the average SAT score (out of 1600) was around 1360. I live in MA and go to a boarding school in RI. Most people consider URI to be a pretty lowly college, however, the pharmacy program is VERY well known and much more prestigious than the college’s other programs. They are also building a brand new pharmacy building on campus which is a plus. I was surprised to see that people with very high scores and grades got rejected from the pharmacy program on CC, however this does speak to the competitive nature of it.

My D was accepted to URI for pharmacy fall 2010. We plan to visit the campus soon. Also accepted to USP, MCPHS, St. John’s (pharmacy) and WNEC (pharmacy).

My son applied in October and was accepted the last week of November. I have heard of others just hearing from uri in the last couple of weeks. I’m assuming you’ve checked e-campus on the uri site as well?

In regards to the topic posted here, we visited northeastern, rutgers, wnec, uconn and uri. He applied to all of those and also pitt. Uri was really nice. The new science building is beautiful and I assume the new pharm building will be equally impressive. Uri is a fairly good sized school, but has a small size feel to it. My son loved Uconn as well, but I think Uconn is getting out of control. They seem to be accepting way more students into “pre-pharm” then they can accept into the school of pharm. I ran into a Uconn pharm student at cvs just before the holidays. She told me that it took her 2 tries to get into the pharm school. She had a 4.0 gpa! I have heard similar horror stories for Uconns school of ed as well.

I’ve been accepted to the two I like, URI and Northeastern. URI with the scholarship is a lot cheaper (net = 15k/yr…im oos). For some reason though, I feel like Northeastern has better connections through with coop and everything. I’d also be in Honors at NEU so I feel like I would have a lot more potential there too. Idk, it’s making the choice difficult.

Has you D made a decision yet? For my S, it’s between USP, URI and St John’s. He is also fall 2010. Your observations and thoughts will be appreciated. Thanks.

It came down to the same three schools. USP was originally her first choice. She didn’t like St. John’s after our visit there. We visited URI for the first time 2/5. Campus wise, URI comes out on top. The new science building is incredible and the pharmacy building will look pretty much the same. They also have a higher first time passing rate on NAPLEX and 100% job placement rate. Even though it’s a larger university than USP their class size will be about one third the size of USP. We live on Long Island so it’s an easy commute using the ferry and freshman can have a car on campus. Which way is your son leaning?

I didn’t realize that you had already responded to my question about URI, USP and St John’s. Coincidently, my son was favoring USP initially also, now, not so much. We are visiting URI again next week for the pharmacy open house and will go back to USP for their open house as well. Next month we’ll have a third look at St John’s, if he can shadow a student there. We’re in NJ so URI is somewhat of a trip, but it looks really promising based on class size and the new facilities. By the way, why didn’t your daughter like St John’s?

After visiting St John’s and URI again, we came away with a very good feeling for URI. The campus is really nice, and as stated, the science builiding is extraordinary. The new pharmacy builiding will follow. Although it’s a trek from NJ, I think it will be my son’s first choice and the best option.

My daughter has been looking at 0-6 schools (got accepted into URI(OOS), St John’s, Rutgers, Northeastern, Buffalo, Albany…) and is leaning towards URI… She received the “typical” academic scholarships from most but received a lot more from St John’s… what are your current thoughts on URI and St John’s? We are visiting St John’s for a 2nd time very soon… What’s not to like about St John’s?
