pharmacy anyone?

i just got hired and have worked 14 hours as a pharmacy technician, now i'm proficient in getting people's prescriptions, filling prescriptions, processing them through the comp.... i guess u learn a lot when u do it incessantly in those 14 hours--

school is gay. u dont use anything u learn in school unless u counsel patients and only the pharmacist is legally able to do that.

junior in hs-- i'm so done with hs i'm sick of it.

wanna go to vcu now. get that damned guaranteed acceptance into mcv. whooyah

screw ionic bonding.

and lastly, cvs is a ***** dont ever work there-- they always need people because they're so f-ing busy, hell i'm the youngest buck behind the counter.

get paid 8 bucks aint worth this but i'm sticking to it.

ARGH!! college-deciding is SO annoying!! my parents keep pestering me about it...JUST BECAUSE i didn't get accepted to uop's pre-pharm program...they think that i'm stupid and don't knoe whut i'm doing...but I KNOE WHUT I'M DOING...they want me to stay in sac and go to sac state or something...WHUT KINDA FREAKING PARENTS WANT THEIR DAUGHTER TO GO TO SAC STATE OF ALL PLACES??!! geez i can't stand all this nagging from them any longer...i've made up my mind and i'm MOVING OUT!!

deep breath okay...i got that off my shoulder...ignore the first paragraph...vince...i couldn't agree with you any more about the whole school topic...ahaha! cuz i feel the EXACT same way!! BUT...unfortunately...in a world like this...if you wanna be rich...school is like..a requirement or something...haha!

j project...you're in a pretty hard situation right now...haha! in my opinion...you shouldn't pay much attention to your parents' wants that much...after all...this is YOUR life...and this is going to be YOUR future...not theirs...so make this decision based on yourself and not them...i mean...sure they gave birth to you and all...but comon now...that was like..17- 18 years ago...ahahha! plus...you have plenty of time to pay them back in the long run after you become successful...lolz. but yea...this is my opinion right here...if i was accepted to uop and ucsd...i'd probably go to uop...because uop has a really friendly learning environment...it's small and there's not that much people...therefore everybody knoes everybody and it's all nice and cozy!! =D...ucsd is great and all...it's pretty...there's guys with nice bodies walking around...amusement parks....EVERYTHING!! BUT...because they have everything...they're probably soooo overpacked....SO much people...it's going to be hard to get classes...and da da da da da...etc...but this is all just my opinion...disregard it if you like...but yea...DAM...i just typed you a whole paragraph...lolz.

haha to me...everybody in here seems to have parent problems...it's kinda funnie actually...well GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR PARENTS EVERYBODY!!

damn first thing is grow up.. the way u type makes u sound ditzy.

secondly, u have to get accepted into a pre-pharm program? at the colleges i talked to (vcu, umd, fl) u dont have to get accepted, u just do it.

Vince-did you go to a pharmacy tech school? Or does your state still let you become one w/on the job trainning?

I feel sorry for the techs who spent up to 20K to be a tech. The schools tell them they are going to be very marketable.

Being a tech would give you an idea of pharmacy. Some techs unfortunately think that tech school will transfer to pharmacy school.

You do have to be accepted to get into certain pre-pharm PROGRAMS, but you can just do pre-pharm REQS (taking the required classes for whatever pharmacy school you aim to go to) and go through the admission process again.

lamom--

i'm a junior in high school. i'm 17. i've never been to an interview in my life.
i've never been to pharm tech school.

you can work without the certification, but within 6 months of working i can get a pharm tech certificate in my state.

first of all. haha the whole ditzy part is just so funnie huh? NOT! do not call me a ditz again or i will smack the living crap outta you. =)

secondly...no you don't have to get into a prepharm program...but a prepharm program just speeds up the whole process...i mean...you can actually just go to any school you want...all you gotta do is just take all the requirements that you need to get into an actual pharmacy school...and after you finish all those requirements...you can graduate or whatever and then apply for an actual pharmacy school..

i am talking about going to a prepharm program becky, prepharm at vcu-- no qualifications, just get into the school and u can do the prepharm program!

Hi everyone, I am in the same dilemma as a few of you guys right now. I was also rejected from the UOP prepharm program but was offered admission through an alternate major. Frankly , I'm disappointed but I will proabbly attend UC irvine and transfer to UCSF pharmacy school. Does anyone know how many people succeed taking this route? thanks

What state is that your from that does not require certification for pharm technician? I've been trying forever to get a pharmacy technician position at Walgreens or CVS.

I heard they pay like $17 an hours? Or was that for pharmacy interns?

I gotta get a pharm technician position.

all i know is:

i'm a junior
never had a job
or an interview
or a call back

walked into my cvs at annandale, va that is REALLY BUSY
talked to the chief pharmacist

and he told me to complete an application

a day later they call me and i come, they interrogate me
and then the next day they say i have the job

after pee test and background check, i start work

i don't have to have certification, i can get one in 6 mo though.

thats all it is-- when i went to the unicru, i hit "pharmacy technician" when it asked me which position i was applying for-- and i guess that's my title then.

after working for 14 hours at 8 bucks an hour, i've only learned to process prescriptions and ring them up. i haven't touched drugs yet except when my pharmacist told me, this is medicine. this is a bottle. fill up 250ml of it.

VinceV-good luck in pharmacy. I know it probably doesn't seem that difficult, but if you caught on in your first 14 hrs you are brighter than the average tech. Just plow through that chem in HS. Hope you get a chance to work some hospital pharmacy.

What state is paying $17 an hr for new techs? I think So CA is $10-$14. Tech schools like to say higher wages.

You're kinda lucky to get a pharmacy tech job as a junior. I thought you had to get certified or take courses in community college or something.

I kind of know somebody working at a pharmacy in Massachusetts thats making $17 an hour. Maybe shes an intern though or she could be a tech.

My friend said that pharmacy tech. make about half as much as a pharmacist if you get a good position. Don't know if this is true..

$8 a hour is kind of low for a pharmacy tech though. Don't cashiers at CVS make $8 an hour too?

Don't know why but everytime I filled out a unicru application, I never hear back from CVS or Walgreens...

I think they start around $10-12 in PA. Techs with certification probably make on the higher end of that. Also, hospitals pay much better than retail for techs, which is the opposite of pharmacist wages.

zerox-- hey i know what u're talking about with the no call back unicru's... what i did first time was i talked to a manager and as i was filling out the unicru application, he asked when i could work... i think he didn't call me back because the days i asked were probably all filled up...

but for the pharmacy position, i came in one day and asked to speak with the chief pharmacist, but he was busy and wasn't able to see me. so the next day i came in at the same time and he noticed my face so he came to the consultation counter so i could talk to him, spent probably 120 seconds speaking to me and listening to my story and he told me to fill out the application. he also told me to leave my name and number so he could check it at the end of the day.

the biggest difference i think is that the pharmacy ALWAYS needs new people especially how this one has a drive through window and only about 5 people working behind the counter at one time. and usually only 1 register is open while there are 3 available. my guess is that too many people ask about the front store thinking that they need experience for the drug work.

i guess it's all motivation-- no brains. especially not for this position.

i'm a little stressed about not finding what i want to do-- this pharm thing is just to get to know the job-- i want a pharmacist's positiion that still pays a honk load of money but at the same time i get to provide counsel to a patient.. cvs gets like a 100 people in a day and u can't get a relationship with a patient.. its basicaly more sucking up and answering 30 second response discussions.

PLEASE HELP !!!@@_@@

Dear Vince
I love being a hospital pharmacist. I recommend you continue working at CVS long to get some experience. Call/visit local hospital pharmacists and see if you can find someone willing to talk with you. Ask them what you need to become a hospital tech. I think you will find your niche. You might find many people too busy or lazy to want to speak to you. Ask the pharmacists you work with if they can refer you to other pharmacists who might want to help you.

Frankly all that matters is if you can pass the board exam. You should be able to find the pass rate of each school. Check the websites for all your pharmacy schools. The site will probably tell you the pre requisites and the classes at the local colleges that satisfy them.

Even if you change your mind about pharmacy, most of your classes will go towards some major.

I don't recommend going into any field just to make a ton of money. Things always can change. Although I would expect pharmacists to have great salaries for quite a while there are no quarantees that this will remain throughout your lifetime. There are more pharmacy schools openning up each year and I am sure the "better" jobs will become more competitive.

Try not to be so stressed, you really do not have to make every decision about your life right now.

LA

wow thats awesome, thanks a lot for your comment-- if only i can find more of the same kind... :)

Vince,

I wished I had a pharmacy tech job just so I can get more experience in pharmacy. I'm gonna be a pharmacist too because of the honk load of money. but i dont really care about getting to counsel the patient too much.

did you just randomly walked up to the cheif pharmacist and ask him if you could get a job? or did you know the guy? what did you ask to him about?

i must have applyed at 3 CVS and still get no call back from unicru. maybe you need connections to get hired. like asking a pharmacist to do you a favor...
