PhD by Distance

Hello,

I would like to know if there are any new york based universities that offer the opportunity to do a PhD by distance, not requiring the student to be on campus or near campus all the time, only sometimes.

Additionally, I am not an American citizen, so are there any universities that offer very reduced fees for doing a PhD?

Thanks

You should take your questions to the online education forum. You can reach it by clicking on “Discussion Home” in the upper left of this screen and then scrolling down.

I would ask what field you are interested in but I can’t believe that there is a field out there that would allow a student to do a Phd remotely.

This should not have been moved, as I am not asking about an online degree.

what are you asking about then? an offline, via paper/snail mail degree?

There are online Ph.D. programs, but who’d respect someone that did all of their research training with basically no interaction with his or her advisor? It seems like a bad idea to me. Optimally, Ph.D. programs in most fields require more interaction than can be accomplished online or through the mail in order to train a budding scientist/applied scientist/professional to reach his or her potential.

The way I study now is by distance, but it is not an online degree as such.

Course materials are mailed out to me, and I mail them back…the online component is the same as if I was enrolled locally…nothing additional.

There are a number of fully accredited distance education programs in the US, but increasingly the work is done online rather than through the mail. You need to clearly define your graduate school goals, and then run a search for distance programs in the appropriate fields of study. Another option would be to look for graduate programs that have very low residence requirements. Many Executive MBA programs, for example, only require a few weekends on campus over the course of the program.

If you can get your hands on them, the following books might be helpful for you:
