You might look at distance learning guides such as Peterson’s Guide, available in libraries or at their website. Similar guides can be found through library catalogs.Yes, it is possible to earn an online doctorate. It is very important to make sure the school is “regionally accredited” by a U.S. regional accred agency. you would need to contact the school itself re: thesis requirements. Divinity schools also have their own accreditation process according to their particular denomination or theological association. bakersguide.com is a listing of Christian schools and colleges. You can also do a search on google.com using keyword, divinity schools U.S. or theological schools, regionally accredited. Good luck in your studies. Please make sure any school you choose is an established, accredited ( either U.S. regional accreditating agency, or theological association, or both, before investing any time or money. there are many “degree mills” fake colleges advertised on the web, avoid these.
“Bear’s Guides to Distance Learning” is also helpful, in avoiding distance degree scams, most libraries have a copy. A website with a discussion forum about distance degrees is: http://forums.degreeinfo.com, also known as Degreeinfo.com- it is free and nonprofit.

What do you want to do with your PhD?

If it’s to teach in a U.S., Canadian or British college/university, the on-line degree will NOT qualify you to do so.

I forgot to mention that on this College confidential site, there’s an international students section you should read.

Re: teaching jobs, that’s a good caveat in general, but several people have already gotten uni teaching jobs provided their online degree was reg. accredited…The prejudice against online degrees is fading as people realize new paradigms have arisen.

This is an old thread, but I just came across it. Bookcases, are you saying that more than once, the search committee (for a position teaching at a university) selected someone with an online Ph.D. degree? tenure track positions?

What college and in what academic area? How did it turn out - do those people still have jobs?
