PhD EE Admissions Advice

Hi I am currently considering applying to an EE PhD program. Can anyone make some recommendations on programs to apply to with my current stats?

1)BSEE Major GPA: 3.32/4.0 (From ABET Accred EE Program) <--worked a fulltime Co-Op during my senior year

2) MSEE GPA: 3.43/4.0 =( <-- I was working full time during my MSEE (30units/2yrs) and made the mistake of taking to many units/semester

3) Completed a MS Project during my MSEE

4) GRE: Need to take this

5) Company has submitted two US patent applications for inventions concerning Integrated Circuits...expecting a few years before patents are issued

6) I will have letters of rec from a "Fellow", Senior Research Manager, MSEE advisor. I am expecting all to be very good. My company is an industry sponsor/partner with schools like stanford, caltech, MIT, UCSD, Santa Clara U, San Jose State U etc

7) I have been working as an RF/Microwave circuit designer for my companies R&D group for the past 3 yrs, and have had a 1yr Co-Op for a major IC firm.

8) I am a hispanic student < I know that this shouldnt matter but some schools look for minorities>

bump^^^Any advice??

Just apply to a bunch of top schools, and a bunch of mid-tier schools (see us news rankings).

Hi what I am kind of worried about is the 3.43 gpa. Is this a major concern since 3.5 is typically a min?

Its a little low for top programs, but so what? Apply and see what happens! Don’t stress over what you can’t change. Good luck!

Woul it help my chances applying to Stanford if I have a PhD from Stanford recommending me?

Not really, unless the PhD is a professor at stanford and the recommendation is a good one.

This helps internationals somewhat (their chances are tiny anyway). Not so much in getting admission at Stanford but in getting admission anywhere at all in the U.S. as it contextualizes their letters. For you it won’t matter where they got their PhD, just where they work now.

It might, depending on that PhD’s reputation and connection to his/her old school! One of my LOR’s was from a Northwestern PhD, and they rolled out the red carpet for me, plus several faculty members whom he personally knew made a point to contact me.

So one of my LOR is from a fellow at my company. This means he is considered an expert in Antennas and other rf and microwave devices. I am applying more towards ic design. My other LOR is from a phd from Stanford who was also a past lecturer. Her focus was rfic under probably one of Stanfords best rfic professors.

Well besides Stanford what are my chances with UCD, Santa Clara, UCSD?
