I'm very interested in pursuing a PhD in sociology, and I hope anyone can give me inputs or views on the field, especially in the upcoming years. What is the future of sociology in the US (I'm from the other side of the world!), and how will the job market look like in the near future? Thank you!

You need a direction for real life goals, not just a generic goal of getting a PhD degree.
That’s the difference.

I would imagine most PhD’s in the social sciences utilize it by teaching in academia or for the fortunate ones who work with the Census or other bureaus. No one can tell you what job you should do unless you want someone to suggest a position for you.

Getting a PhD means you will have mastered a research approach with sociological aspects, but it might not be necessary for working a specific job that would only require a MA.

Thanks a lot for your suggestion, kaijura! Yes, I know my goal, which is to be a college professor, and I’m currently pursuing my MA while teaching part-time at a small university. :)
