Hi, I've heard that academic masters and PhD programs look down on business majors. Would the same hold true for business minors? Would a business minor strengthen my application, weaken it, or neither?

Btw, I'd be applying for social science fields.

As a general rule, most minors do nothing for a candidate (positive or negative). The only exceptions that I have seen has been when the minor adds a skill that directly complements the major – for example, a minor in Spanish or Chinese if the major is International Relations, or a Comp Sci minor for a math major.

Since graduate school programs are structured to provide depth in a single area, rather than breadth, I suspect they will focus their attention on your preparation for that particular social science field. How many courses did you take in that field? What specific courses? How did you do in those classes? etc. They won’t really care about your business classes.
