PhD with a business minor

Hi, I've heard that academic masters and PhD programs look down on business majors. Would the same hold true for business minors? Would a business minor strengthen my application, weaken it, or neither?

Btw, I'd be applying for social science fields.

Why on earth would you want to take any business classes at all, much less a minor, even less a major, if your intention is to become a professor in a social sciences field? It would neither strengthen nor weaken your application - but it would be a waste of credits that could have been applied to courses that would have strengthened your application.

I’m not 100% committed on going to graduate school and I’d like to be able to get a job if I opt not to go.

I find it kind of funny when people get a business degree “just to get a good job.” Business is not nearly as simple as people make it sound to be. It may be if you are a management or business admin degree, but in that case one’s silly motive to get the degree, to get a job, ends up not actually happening.

Wait until you go to college, take intro courses in each of the fields you are interested, and go from there. If you go into business thinking its a cake walk and has no need for passion, think again. If that were the case, we would have an overwhelming number of accountants and financial professionals. Business is like any other field like history or “social sciences:” you need to be passionate about it. Not trying to scare you but instead trying to bust a myth here.

“Wait until you go to college” - I’m a junior in college…

I want to get an internship at an insurance company to see if that would be a good field for me. However, pretty much every place is turning me down simply because of my anthro major. This is where some business classes would be helpful…

Not all PhDs go that far just to become a professor. If you think that OP is going to get a PhD to become a professor, then that’s quite a naive assumption you have.

It is said that if you aren’t sure whether you want to pursue a PhD during your undergrad career, then your passion isn’t strong enough. If you’re not committed to the idea of sticking through that field all the way to a PhD and writing your dissertation, then I say you shouldn’t obtain it until you’ve been admitted to graduate school. After finishing your Master’s is probably when you’ll be certain of your decision.

As for whether you should invest in a business minor, it really depends on what you’re majoring in, but the only social science that I can imagine it being truly applicable is Economics. All of the other social sciences probably won’t benefit much unless you plan to combine your studies of that particular social science and business into a company. If that’s your goal, then you should explain your direction.
