Phi Theta Kappa?

I got an email invitation the other week inviting me to apply for Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society for two-year colleges. Is anyone here a member? If so, what are the benefits, exactly? Is it just a waste of money and time? I'm kind of hesitant about paying $75 just to add another line to my resume/transfer application.

Yes, put it on my application last year, got into Berkeley. Not sure how much it helped but you never know.

It's probably not worth it UNLESS you get involved. If you just use it as a resume padder, they're going to know it and won't really care whether you joined or not.

Oh, I guess that's what I was asking - is it essentially a resume padder, or is it something you can really get involved in? If so...what exactly does it involve?

The email my adviser sent out was pretty unclear. It just mentioned something about scholarship opportunities, which I can get without joining.

it depends on your chapter, but our chapter had allot of opportunities to get involved, like art shows for homeless teenagers, revitalization of the downtown women's shelter...etc. (come to think about it, I did participate in several of those activities and wrote about it in my essay, so I guess it did help). You might want to contact them and see if they have opportunities to get involved.

I'm not involved with it myself, but this is what I've gathered.

The activity level varies from school to school, so you might need to send an email asking how active the organization is at your school. If you can become an officer of an active branch, I think that would be great. I really have no idea what that involves, but maybe organizing events/fundraisers? Hopefully someone else will chime in on this,

Also check out Alpha Gamma Sigma. It will probably more advantageous if you are looking to transfer to schools in California. It is the only honor society in California that actually gets put on your transcripts.

Plan on becoming a officer. Otherwise, joining won't help much.
