Hi, I am a community college student, transferring in fall 2010. I Have a 3.7 GPA, and I was invited to join the Phi Theta Kappa chapter at San Diego City College. They are asking for $75 as a members fee, and they say that being in Phi Theta Kappa will show up on your transcripts. My question is- is this worth it? I plan on applying to Berkeley, UCLA, and UCSD, Cultural Anthropology major, and did a year of AmeriCorps. Is it really worth it to join Phi Theta Kappa on top in taking honors courses?

I think it really is worth it. Not only does it appear on your transcripts, but it also gives you even more opportunities at different scholarships after you transfer.

If you have the opportunity, I really think you should go for it. [: You gotta have a lot more than the good grades to get into UCs, this will put you over the edge compared to other students.

I can't honestly say if it really matters. I know people here who transferred both with and without membership. It's obvious by the transcripts if you were a good student. Being an officer might carry a bit more weight though.

I personally joined because I wanted to wear the nifty drape at commencement. :)

Now, if you're offered Phi Beta Kappa after you get here.... take it.

See if you can get into EOPS, they will pay the fee for you. That's what I did. Not sure if it helped me any on my applications, but I have put it on my resume and it seems to help.

I was invited to join and I would basically do it just for the access to scholarships... is this a good idea? Did anyone here get scholarships from them? I am transferring after this semester, will there still be benefits after I get to a UC?

Look forward to hearing from those that did join about the benefits, specifically in terms of scholarships.

It is worth is for sure; not just for EC but for scholarship opportunities, and other involvements within and outside the school which again reflect as ECs.

I am the VP of a PTK on my campus. Yes, it makes a huge differenece if you want it to. Just being a member makes you look like a phony just spinning the wheels, but if you become active, as a Berkeley admissions rep told me, “it adds a nice kudos to your application”.
